Gold Skull Guide

This is a guide for each of the 55 gold skulls in Skulls of the Shogun. I would recommend playing on easy and saving often, as things don't always go to plan... Anyway, onto the guide.

Level Name: Line Limbo

Gold Skull 1: Beat level without losing any units.

Guide: This is the first level in the game and thus it's very simple. Play smart, keep your infantry out in front to take the brunt of attacks (they have the best defense) and eat skulls to maintain their health. Here is a video of this particular skull being achieved.

Level Name: Bedlam Beach

Gold Skull 1: Beat level without losing any units.

Guide: Another fairly simple one, with the exception of the last encounter. When you reach the end of each encounter, make sure to eat the skulls before continuing to the arrow. I recommend upgrading an archer and a cavalry unit to demon form, to face the final group. Here is a video of this skull being achieved.

Level Name: Archer Ambush

Gold Skull 1: Beat level without losing any units.

Gold Skull 2: Beat level with at least 500 rice.

Guide: In this map, there are many archers hidden in the bamboo (which grants a 20% evasion bonus). Once you kill them, be sure to make use of the bamboo yourself -- it may cause the enemy to miss. Below your spawn in the bamboo, there is a green potion (it will appear when you walk near it), pick this up to increase your health regeneration and total health. With regards to staying alive, be prepared for the ambush once you kill all of the initial enemies on screen. They come from the far left of screen, so try not to have any low health units there.

For the 500 rice, try to keep one unit alive in the first part of the level, whilst you haunt the rice paddies. Once you have your 500, proceed to finish the level. Don't buy units.

Here is a video showing both skulls being achieved:

Level Name: Glorious Gates

Gold Skull 1: Beat level without awakening your General.

Gold Skull 2: Defeated enemy General with your General.

Gold Skull 3: Beat level with at least 2 demon allies alive.

Guide: Straight off, you'll notice that two of these conflict with one another, which means it will take two playthroughs. To beat it without awakening your General, simply leave him meditating and take out the General with your other units. Do this by killing the unit directly in front of their General, then attacking him with every unit in range. He will have low health with it being so early in the match and will go down. Also, be aware there is a potion in the bamboo to the right of your spawn that will help.

To defeat the enemy General with your General, do the same as above except wake up your General as soon as the mission begins. Try to drink the potion with him, so he can output more damage. Get the final blow with him to receive the gold skull.

Beating the level with 2 demon allies alive is the hardest skull for this level. You will essentially need to kill the majority of units surrounding their General, and try to duck in and out of the action with your units eating the enemy skulls. Focus on only two units, as the quicker you get them to demon level, the better. Awaken your General to help out -- you can make him a demon if you want.

Level Name: Sakura's Solace

Gold Skull 1: Beat level with at least 2 monk allies alive.

Gold Skull 2: Beat level with at least 1000 rice.

Gold Skull 3: Beat level without losing any units.

Guide: This can be a little tricky. In order to have 2 monks alive at the end, you need to first haunt their shrines to bring them into existence. Then, you need to protect their shrines from potential capture. If the shrine is captured, your monk will die and you'll need to recapture it. Once you have both your monks, keep the back from the action and you should be ok.

1000 rice is a lot and it will likely require you to take advantage of the monks "purifying" spell. What this spell does, is it converts any skull (yours or the enemy's) into 75 rice. If you find that you haven't got enough rice from the paddies, use this spell to get the rest. Of note, your Fox Monk is required to eat one skull before he can access this spell.

Beating the level without losing any units is all about defense. Try to hang back and wait until their units try to capture the rice paddies. When they do, they won't counter-attack, so it's the perfect time to damage them. Keep your infantry out front and get your General to demon level as soon as possible. Snipe with your archers (get behind your infantry, connected in a spirit wall) and you should be ok. Avoid the enemy General like the plague, until you're confident that you will be able to take him down without a unit getting killed.

Here is a video of both "Gold Skull 1" and "Gold Skull 2" being achieved:

Level Name: Pink Pursuit

Gold Skull 1: Beat level without losing any units.

Gold Skull 2: Beat level with your General as a Demon.

Gold Skull 3: Defeated at least 25 enemies.

Guide: Within a couple of turns, you will find enemies spawning behind you (where you began). You must get to the bridge. Immediately, send a cavalry unit to knock the archer off the ledge, then send all of your units in that direction. Allow your General to eat the skull, and those of any other enemies (assuming your other units aren't too damaged) in order to become a demon. He will be a great help in demon form. Archers are your greatest enemy, so keep moving forward and target them above all else when you get in range. At the very end, when you get near the bridge, a few reinforcements (an archer and a soldier) will arrive. Be prepared for that. Save very often in this one, as there are a couple of chokepoints where things can end very badly.

As for defeating 25 enemies, remember where you killed that first archer? Stay in that area and let the enemy come to you. It will be an absolute slaughter and eventually they will stop spawning. You can manually count or check the objective menu, though it only tells you whether you have reached 25 kills or you haven't. No actual numbers. If the gold skull is coloured but not exactly solid, you have fulfilled the requirement but need to end the level.

Level Name: Potion Panic

Gold Skull 1: Beat level with at least 4 enemies alive.

Gold Skull 2: Knockback at least 3 enemies into thorns.

Gold Skull 3: Beat level with at least 2 demon allies alive.

Guide: To beat the level with 4 enemies remaining, you are going to need to ignore the majority of their units and go straight for the General. There are several potions hidden in the bamboo, as always, make sure you grab them for the extra damage/health. Once you get to the General, try to hit him towards the ledge, to end it a bit sooner.

The thorns are scattered around the level, they are brown and spiky looking -- as you would expect. To knockback an enemy, you must use either your General, an infantry unit or a cavalry unit. Archers don't work. When you go to target an enemy, a line will appear behind them, showing the direction they will be pushed. Use this to line the hit up with the thorns. If you do it right, you will notice the unit receives and extra "-1" below the normal damage displayed.

2 demon allies is a simple one. Eat 3 skulls with two separate units, to turn them into demon's. Keep them alive, whether by retreating them or healing them after they take damage, in order to receive the skull.

Level Name: Guardian Gardens

Gold Skull 1: Beat level with no enemy monks alive.

Gold Skull 2: Defeated enemy General with your General.

Gold Skull 3: Defeated at least 1 monk by haunting its shrine.

Guide: This level has Demon Fox Monks from the get-go, so they're quite powerful and resilient. If attacking them, you're going to need to gang up, as it will take 3-4 units to take one down (depending on if your General is involved). I would suggest upgrading your General to demon form, then hunting one of the Monks down. Leave the other. Kill a lot of the enemies until the shrines near the enemy General are somewhat clear. Allow one of your units (preferably one with plenty of health, in case of an enemy attack) to haunt it. If you've killed one of the monks, check the shrine to see whether it has a purple fire below it. If it does, that's the one you should haunt. Upon doing so, the enemy Monk will die, granting you the skull.

Defeating the General with your General is a case of upgrading him then throwing him in there. If you get there early enough, the enemy General will still be low health and meditating, allowing you to attack without any counter-attacks coming your way.

Here is a video of all 3 gold skulls being achieved:

Level Name: Raiden's Rampage

Gold Skull 1: Beat level without losing any units.

Gold Skull 2: Enemy General defeated by an Oni.

Gold Skull 3: Beat level in under 4 minutes.

Guide: Gold skull 1 & 3 are ridiculously easy. First thing, send your cavalry unit down to the salamander shrine and haunt it. Send some of your other units in that direction. When you begin the next turn, use your Salamander to target the enemy General; he should take 3-4 health off him. Follow up that attack with an archer, or cavalry (whatever is in range) and he will die a quick death.

From those easy skulls, we move to a rather difficult one. In order to summon an Oni, your salamander must eat one skull, he also needs to be within range of an enemy unit (or another Oni). Try to back all of your units into a corner, after casting an Oni (you can cast 3 in total), to force the enemy General to run into them. Be careful though, you don't want the Oni to hit you, so try to steer clear of it. Save often!

Here is a video of "Gold Skull 1" and "Gold Skull 3" being achieved:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peFvDgiP67c]Skulls of the Shogun | Raiden's Rampage - YouTube[/ame]

Level Name: Murderous Moats

Gold Skull 1: Damaged Kurokawa.

Gold Skull 2: Knockback at least 8 enemies over ledges.

Gold Skull 3: All enemies at campfire section of the level defeated by an Oni.

Guide: Kurokawa is the blue General at the end of the level, who sits behind 3 archers. In order to damage him, you'll need to defeat an archer in front of him, then target him with your own archer or salamander. This is within one turn -- if you end the turn without hitting him, another archer will spawn, protecting him.

Another option at your disposal, is to upgrade your Salamander Monk to demon form and use his lightning spell to hit Kurokawa. Target one of the archers in front of him and he'll be hit too. The lightning spell requires 100 rice to cast, but is an easy (and guaranteed) way of getting this skull.

(Thanks Sceneman)

At the beginning of the level, you should be able to get 3 knockback's immediately. Your next opportunity will be at the very end (when you encounter Kurokawa and the green General). Keep your units in the fray, near the bridges (preferably the bottom one, so you don't get hit by archers). Create a spirit wall and wait for enemies to come to you. When they do, hit them off the edge. Check the objective screen to see whether you've reached the target, or maintain a manual count.

When you begin the level, there is a salamander shrine just ahead. Use this, but leave one skull for him. When he arrives, eat the skull so you unlock the "Summon Oni" spell and head onward. You'll see the fire as soon as you reached the next area. Move down a bit and target those around it with your Oni spell. He will spawn on the next turn. Move all of your units back, in case they would accidentally kill the enemy instead of the Oni. You can continue to cast a couple more Oni's, to be certain that they will get the job done.

Here is a video of "Gold Skull 3" being achieved:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj-CXwb1IvU]Skulls of the Shogun | Murderous Moats - YouTube[/ame]

Level Name: Hurricane Plain

Gold Skull 1: Defeated enemy General with your General.

Gold Skull 2: Defeated 3+ enemies via lightning shield counter-attack.

Gold Skull 3: Beat level with at least 2 monks as demons.

Guide: This map is essentially split in half by a river. What you want to do, is move your Archers and Salamanders to the edge of the river on your side and shoot any enemies that get close. They will try to haunt the rice paddies and the Salamander shrine, which gives you the perfect opportunity to take them out. While you're covering the middle with your ranged units, advance to the top left corner of the map with your General and another unit. Try to push to the bridge, so that you can pick up the skulls of the enemies your ranged units have taken out. Keep eating the skulls until you have a couple of demon units, then attack the enemy General. You can hit him and then run back towards the river, so that your ranged units can shoot him next turn.

At random intervals throughout the level, units will be awarded a lightning shield -- the lightning shield appears as a white circle around your unit and will damage any enemy units that attack it. You can't really rely on the random shield, so what you should do is eat two skulls with a Salamander Monk in order to unlock the lightning shield spell. Once you have it unlocked, you can cast it on any of your units (it costs 25 rice though) which makes it a lot easier to get the kills required. It will require some sacrifice on your behalf though. Cast the lightning shield on your unit then send him to the enemy with the lowest health. You may die on the following turn, but as long as you killed one of the enemy with your shield, it can be considered a success. The lightning shield does 2 damage to your opponent.

There are four monk shrines in this map: two Salamander Monk shrines and two Fox Monk shrines. I would suggest going for the Salamander shrine on your side of the map and the Fox shrine on the left. You'll need to protect them, so it's a good idea to haunt the ones on your side, as opposed to near the enemy's spawn. Eat three skulls with each of your Monks to turn them into demons and then send them to the back, or protect them with other units.

Level Name: Forsaken Flights

Gold Skull 1: Defeated at least 5 Oni.

Gold Skull 2: No allies damaged by Oni.

Gold Skull 3: Defeated enemy General with your General.

Guide: You'll notice upon starting this level that there are a lot of skulls scattered around the map, mostly outside of the caves. You might think "Hey, free skulls, great!", but unfortunately it isn't the case. If you get close to the cave, an Oni will pop out next turn. You will see eyes appear in the cave, which is when you know you have got their attention. Oni hit hard, but have limited movement. Use this to your advantage. Use your cavalry to provoke them; run in, grab a skull, run out. On the following turn, hit the Oni with your archers and if its still not dead, hit it with your melee units. The Oni respawn after a few turns, so you can either "camp" outside one cave or make your way to the others. Kill 5 of them and you'll get the gold skull.

The next skull requires you to take no damage from the Oni, so you will want to avoid the caves as best you can. If you do accidentally provoke the Oni (or the enemy does), maintain your distance from it and either sneak past it (remember the limited movement range) or kill it with your ranged units.

The enemy General is well protected to start with, thus you should try to thin the enemy's ranks first, before bringing your own General up. As always, eat three skulls with him, so you can take advantage of his demon form. Take the enemy General with your own and you'll receive the third gold skull.

Level Name: Fujin Falls

Gold Skull 1: Beat level with at least 4 allies still alive.

Gold Skull 2: Beat level in 14 rounds or less.

Gold Skull 3: Beat level with at least 2 Crow Monk allies still alive.

Guide: This level introduces you to the Crow Monk -- a unit with the ability to gust the enemy, gust haunted shrines/paddies, skulls etc. You will want to use him quite often, however, first you need to actually bring him to life. Your opening turn should consist of you haunting the Crow Monk shrine at the top of the map with your soldier, and also moving the archer up the very back into the bamboo (to his right). Move your General and cavalry units towards the tiny Crow Monk island and form a spirit wall. You may also wish to grab the green potion here, so that the enemy doesn't get it. When your Crow Monk spawns, use him to push the cavalry unit (the one that ate the skull) into the water. Then, kill the other cavalry unit with your archers. Allow one of your archers to eat all of the available skulls up top, as his demon form will be very useful. As you move down to the stone "bridge", enemy reinforcements will arrive. Deal with them and the game will tell you to advance to an arrow. Before doing so, be sure to eat all of the skulls. Reserve 6 for your Crow Monks, seeing how their demon form is required for a skull.

Upon proceeding to the arrow, the enemy General and his army will appear. If you have fewer than 4 allies alive at this point, haunt the nearby shrines to spawn some more. Since you ate all of the skulls previously, you should be pretty strong, thus, you can ignore most of the enemy units and head straight for the General. Hit him in the direction of the thorns (or the edge). Hopefully, this will see you beat the level before round 15 arrives.

Level Name: Lion's Labyrinth

Gold Skull 1: Beat level owning all cleansing shrines.

Gold Skull 2: Beat level with at least 4 demon allies alive.

Gold Skull 3: No allies damaged by cleansing shrines.

Guide: There are eight cleansing shrines scattered about the level. If owned by the enemy, at the start of their turn, the shrines will inflict one damage upon any of your units in its radius (you can see the radius of the shrines attack by selecting it). If owned by you, it will do the same except to your enemy, instead of you. From the beginning of the level, head right towards the two shrines. Don't try to capture them immediately, as your units will likely die. Instead, have your units stay within reach of the shrines and allow the enemy to come to you. If they try to capture a shrine, it is the perfect time to attack (they can't counter and you also don't want them to have the shrine). As soon as their numbers have dwindled on the right side, capture the two shrines, eat the skulls and head towards the middle. Leave one unit on the right, in case there are any stragglers who will attempt to haunt the shrines. Haunt the middle shrines and head left, again, leaving a unit (or two) to defend them. You may also want to haunt the Crow Monk shrine at this point (it's just ahead of the middle cleansing shrines), as the Crow Monk can gust out the enemy's haunted structures, so that they're no longer under their control. Which means, when attempting to haunt the cleansing shrines, you won't get damaged. Deal with anyone on the left, haunt the shrines, then head towards the top. There is no General in this level, instead, the goal is to kill all of the enemy units. Keep one alive while you go and haunt the last two shrines, also, eat any skulls around to work towards the "4 demon allies alive" skull. End the level once you have fulfilled both of these.

The last skull is the hardest. You cannot take a single point of damage from cleansing shrines, which means you need to be extremely careful. Check the shrines attack distance if you think you're even close to it. Only attempt to haunt them if the enemy doesn't own them (or the one besides them) as it takes a whole turn and you will take damage in that time. It's a case of avoiding them for the majority of the level and pulling the enemies towards you.

Here is a video showing "Gold Skull 3" being achieved:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKbxEMJfyd0]Skulls of the Shogun | Lion's Labyrinth - YouTube[/ame]

Level Name: Chaos Canyon

Gold Skull 1: Knockback enemy General over ledge.

Gold Skull 2: Beat level owning all Monk shrines.

Gold Skull 3: Defeated at least 5 foes using the Crow Monk.

Guide: There are ledges on either side of the map and also in the middle (hit/gust them off the bridges). You'll want to draw the enemy General towards one of these, by positioning your units near them (in a spirit wall). Once he is near the edge, either hit him or use gust to push him over.

There are three Monk shrines in this level. One up the top, one in the middle and one down the bottom. To begin with, send a cavalry unit to haunt the top shrine, as well as an archer to protect him. Push a few units through the middle to take control of the area surrounding the Crow Monk shrine (a spirit wall at the start of the "enemy bridge" is a good idea) and then haunt the shrine. At the bottom, use any remaining units (including your General) to wipe out any resistance there. Also, if you see an enemy trying to haunt the bottom shrine, use your Crow Monk -- who should remain in the middle, near his shrine -- to gust the unit away from it. After a few turns, enemy units will arrive behind you, so be prepared to defend the shrines -- especially the top one. Capture the soldier shrine up there if need be. If you kill the enemy General whilst owning all of the Monk shrines, you will be awarded the skull.

The Crow Monk cannot attack, well, not in the traditional sense. He can only gust enemy units. Thus, in order to defeat 5 units, you'll need to gust them off ledges. The best way to do this is to stick around the middle of the level, so that the enemy comes across the bridge for you. When they're on it, select gust and line up the white line that appears behind the unit, with the ledge. The white line shows the direction the gust will push the unit(s) in. If the unit falls off the edge, that is one defeated, four to go. Be sure to place an infantry unit directly in front of your Crow Monk when waiting for the enemy to come for you. It will keep him safe. Also, eat any skulls you come across, as the two turns demon form provides will be useful.

Level Name: Autumn Assault

Gold Skull 1: Enemy General defeated by a cleansing shrine.

Gold Skull 2: Beat level with at least 800 rice.

Gold Skull 3: Defeated enemy General with your General.

Guide: Before we go further, let me make it clear, you should save before attempting "Gold Skull 1", as it is likely to take several attempts. Each cleansing shrine does 1 damage - to whom depends on who is controlling the shrine, and whose turn it is. The most damage you're able to inflict with the cleansing shrines is two (due to two shrines overlapping). That's what makes it difficult to kill the enemy General with the shrine. He will often heal if you get him to low health, or he will attack, basically amounting to him suiciding (the counter attack kills him). Take note of what units you're using to hit him with. The difference between your attack strength and his defense strength is what determines the damage he will receive. Use this knowledge to get him to low health, then draw him into the range of the shrines.

If going for the 800 rice, you should rush immediately to the Fox shrine (it is to the left and across the water from your spawn) and haunt it. Don't worry too much about haunting the rice paddies at this stage, as the archers above will hurt you, a lot. Bring the Fox Monk back to where you spawn, and make a stand with your other units at the two cleansing shrines above. Kill everyone in the immediate area, eat at least one skull with your Fox Monk then begin purifying skulls. Try to strike a balance between the amount you purify and the amount your units eat. You'll want your General to gain demon form, as well as at least one other unit. If purifying the skulls doesn't get you over 800, begin to haunt the rice paddies. Don't spend any rice unnecessarily (such as level 3 spells) and you should be fine.

As suggested in the paragraph above, make a stand just above your spawn, at the two cleansing shrines. When the enemies stop coming for you, move up to the stairs on your right. Quickly haunt the two shrines there (make sure to protect the units haunting them), and make another stand there. Once the enemy numbers have dwindled to a reasonable amount, attack the enemy General. Get the killing blow with your own General (who, if he has attained demon form should have 3 attacks per turn) and the final skull is yours.

Level Name: Glassy Glacier

Gold Skull 1: Beat level owning all shrines.

Gold Skull 2: Knockback at least 5 enemies over ledges.

Gold Skull 3: Didn't attack with any unit but your General.

Guide: There are a total of four shrines on the map, two on your side, two on the enemy's side. Haunt the two shrines on your side early, then push towards the others. You may need to leave a unit near the shrine after haunting it, in order to protect it. Leave one or two enemies alive at the end if need be, to make it easier to haunt the shrines without being disturbed.

Knockback is very dangerous on this level, as the ice is very slippery. Anyone who is hit while standing on it (who isn't in a spirit wall) will go flying backwards a long, long way. What you want to do, is get at least two units together, relatively close to the edge (standing on the ice) and form a spirit wall. This should draw the enemy to you, but you won't go flying off the edge because of the spirit wall. When it's your turn, line up your attack so the enemy will go in the direction of the cliff and hit them. Keep doing this until you've knocked 5 enemy units over the ledges.

This is a little tricky, but if you follow the advice above, it's manageable. Do not ever initiate an attack with a unit other than your General - counter attacks are obviously fine (they're totally out of your control). Awaken your General immediately. Group your General with a couple of your units on the ice, making sure to form a spirit wall. Kill any units who come near and eat their skulls. Since your General is doing all the work, he will take priority when it comes to eating skulls. Also, capture the Monk shrine and summon a Fox Monk to heal your units. Whilst your General is the most important unit, he does need support, so keep those around him healed too. Take control of as many shrines as you can and protect them, to prevent the enemy numbers from getting out of control.

Thanks for your hard work in making these! I got about 30 or so on my own, so far. But cant seem to get the "Murderous Moats - defeat all enemies in campfire section with an Oni" I was sure only Oni killed all the enemies, but the skull didn't unlock.

Will check out your guide and try again!

edit: ah I see the clip for that stage isn't up yet, I'll eagerly await it :)

Oh, one tip I can add for "Gold Skull 1: Damaged Kurokawa" on Murderous Moats. A surefire way of hitting him easily is to upgrade your Salamander from the first shrine to Demon form (and thus unlocking the "Lightning Storm" spell, also note this spell requires 100 rice so farm those paddies by the campfire). Then simply get your Salamander into position and target a blue archer. The spell will hit Kurokawa and all the other archers, and earn you the gold skull. Lightning Storm has HUGE range so this skull really is cake.

Feel free to add this to your guide if you like.

Also I'm looking to boost the "Epic Win" and "Kurokawa Would Be Proud" achievements. Any online ones you still need Shelton? cheers

You're welcome! I actually already have Murderous Moats done and it displays the Oni skull being achieved, I just need to get it uploaded. I'll start it now, though my internet isn't amazing, so it will probably be a few hours. lol.

*Edit- YouTube is estimating 2 hours.

No, I completed the game a few days ago. Though, you can feel free to add me if you want help with those.

That would be great if you could help me with those! should only take about 10 minutes if we use your "Chaos Canyon" method for Epic Win.

Will add you on XBL tonight. Since you're an aussie our timezones should match up good.

Also, I'll post some more pertinent information in your achievement guide thread

Sorry, I haven't been around much. I forgot to add, I'm on Windows 8, so "Epic Win" would probably take a bit longer than 10 minutes, as for some reason the turns take around 30 seconds to send. No real time multiplayer, sadly.

awesome guide, was struggling with this game but this will help alot. cheers chap.

:) Cheers, I'm glad it's helping. I will try to get the rest done soon, and get videos up for each of them.

Great guide! Fujin Falls is driving me crazy, though... I don't know if this is a glitch on the 360 version that's not on W8, but if you beat a mission ON round 14, the stat screen says "Rounds: 15" and you don't get the skull.

So you actually need to beat it in 13 rounds, at least on 360. Thought that was worth noting since it's frustrating the crap out of me right now; it's barely possible and depends far too much on luck. :(
