How soon after smashing blocks do you pause & restart?

Question is as it says on the box - is it the second you hit the blocks with your saber etc you can hit Pause > Restart, or do you have to wait til it goes to the next bird, or til the level is over etc?

I restarted as soon as the block broke, and i didn't have any problems
