Animality...?

Ok so I've been trying to do this finisher for the achievement and it's been forever since I've played an MK game.

From memory I know you need to let them win a round, then on round 3 you need to do a mercy before the animality. Question is does distance matter when doing mercy?

My next question is do you need to hold block to do the animality? because a lot of them include pressing up a few times... just wondering because like I said... the last time I played these games were when they were still coming out in the arcade haha
