So I had some fun naming my soldiers,
Dutch
Mac
Blain
Billy
Poncho
Hawkins

Guess where that inspiration came from?

How did you name yours?

I had a Heavy Weapons Guy named James "Kong "Vegas...He just looked like the Vegas from ME 3, thats why i changed the name and he was awesome. 33 Kills, a mohawk, holo targeting to support my snipers...Died in Operation Enduring Heart by a Muton Berserker he missed with his friggin 90% shot-.-

Then there was "Spider" one of my snipers. In the end had about 60 Kills, but as soon as things went sideways he went into pansy-mode. But heres the hook: Everytime, with some few exceptions, he shoot something out of panic, he killed it. Well...that did apply to teammates as well...Poor Monica...So brave...and then shoot in the back of the head by your teammate...with a sniper rifle...from close distance...after you killed five aliens...seems like it was a fixed point in time (happened all the three times i tried to save her with the power of reloading)

Jorge "Loki" Pena...My only surviving Psi-Ops and a snapshot-sniper. He was an ass. He was trained to replace Spider in indoor missions, but he was a useless piece of blond, rockerbearded crap...But hey...he was one of the two (i never got more, despite a lot of testing) Psi-Ops and one of the survivors of Enduring Heart. Man that mission was a total wreck... Still didn't like him, though. He's just a weirdo and had to have one of the archangel suits...what did you do with it, huh? fly up in the like a eagle and get friggin shot down like a football stuck in a tree...

Of course, Elena "The Boss" *insert russian last name here*. She was the Queen of them all. Until the last missions (meaning before Spider got the double tap) she had the most kills on her sleeve, only beaten by Vegas until...well stuff...She was a support and with us since the first UFO-shootdown. After a very, very, very lucky movement of it she captured the ethereal (he walked right in front of my snipers-.-100 percent hit chance^^ glad loki didnt miss that one...i would have abandoned him) and she was really The Boss...

In my Impossible playthrough there is Arya Stark. A sniper...but she had only two missions to prove herself worthy the name, so yeah...

I rarely change the names. Most of the time i just change the nicknames. Don't want to get too attached to the crew in my ironman playthrough...Rookies are dying left and right. And i can't ressurect them (meaning reload the hell out of it).

PS: i personally dont get the reference...Mac sounds familiar, though. I can't stop thinking of Walking Dead...but never saw the series.

They have to earn them. As soon as the game decides, they are worth a nickname, which is i think after the promotion to the third level, you can change them.

I started off by naming mine after friends but it was sort of weird watching them die, so on my 2nd game i named them after the great people in Civ Rev. It brings a smile to my face watching Albert 'A-bomb' Einstein cause havoc on aliens.

They are all characters from the movie Predator.


I started off naming my soldiers from members of the Basik's Own - from David Weber and John Ringo's March upcountry series. Weirdly they all got promoted into tracks that suited their characters

Then I got my first Psi trained soldier and I named him Sheldon 'Bazinga' Cooper

For my first playthrough I only did the nicknames for my core. Had Angel (female, support) Valkyrie (female, Assault) Seraph (female sniper) ArchAngel (Male Assault)

I'm on my first play through, haven't changed anyone's name. Was planning on it on my other games, once I have a better hang of things.

Yes you are right. Was looking for 'Predator' and didn't notice DEG23s xcom version of "get to the chopper". Sorry bout that DEG23. You WIN! Dutch, Mac and Blain kinda gave it away, huh

Was customising a heavy soldier and noticed it looked like Jesse Ventura. That's when the idea hit me to name them after the soldiers in Predator.

you do realize that the "random" numbers are generated by a seed that is generated when you start a mission right? So, if you do the same order of events every time you load a save, you will get exactly the same results.

I put helmets on my guys and named them after the Carmine Brothers, Clayton, Ben and Anthony.(I believe there was 1 more but I never looked deep enough to find the rest of the names)

Interestingly enough "The volunteer" was, I think Ben, and obviously instead of being killed, Killed himself. those Carmines love to die.

I leave the names as they come. A lot of the time the nicknames just match the troopers. Had a sniper nicknamed Demon. She had 105 kills in 32 missions. So was definitely a Demon.

My assault was given the name devil dog. She got practically every kill in every mission. I renamed her to devil bitch. She died to my very first encounter with a muton berserker.

The next game, my sniper resurrected the name and earned "Ain't No Cavalry Coming" - the name has thus been memorialized.

New game's sniper is Baroness. She was the only survivor of the first mission. It's possible she will be another hero. Has been promoted every mission so far.

No idea why all the special characters end up female. I don't particularly care about the sex, but it seems like every male character I get dies. The first time I beat it I had 7 female colonels and 1 male colonel.

I just leave the names as the game issues them. They usually fit just fine.

My crazy assault shotgunner who rushes in to take down Sectopods in a blaze of alloy cannon shrapnel? "Gonzo"

My deadeye sniper who crits for 19 damage? "Garotte".

My bullet swarm heavy? "Doomsday".

My fast-as-lightning medic? "Pox".

My assault who took Flush instead of Rapid Fire? "Mad man" (yeah, what was HE thinking?!)

I'm loving these nicknames!

I think the Devs may have put some rules or modifiers (or they're trolling us) on the nickname generation, both of my Snipers got the nicknames "Alpha" and "Omega" in that order. I agree with Colmarr, loving the nicknames that the game is issuing my soldiers.

Haven't renamed soldiers yet, but I had one rookie named Mordecai. When he got promoted to squaddie he was made a sniper :P

I named my snipers, Garrus Vakarian and Thane Krios. All my squad are ME2 themed so far. Too bad Legion has no last name....
