1 Vs. 100 wasn't even the first. There have been several free games, most of which didn't even require XBL Gold. I think it's more accurate to say that this is the first "freemium" game on Xbox. Whatever you want to call it, it's a load of fun (just played the beta). It's not quite up there with Fat Princess, but considering that this is free, I think it's a great alternative.

Or if you can't be bothered to read all that, the general gist is this:

The base game is free and you can enjoy it and get all the GS out of it without spending any money. However, if you want you can spend money on in-game items to enhance the game (micro-transactions). eg costumes, weapons etc.

These types of games already exist on Windows Phone 7 (Bug Village, Gun Bros and Contract Killer). Happy Wars will be the first on 360, although there is another announced called Ascend: New Gods.

I am hoping the full game is released this month or next as it is a lot of fun and I would really love to play it will a lot of friends as of right now its just me and my brother. I am a warrior and he is a mage and we make a decent team but I would love to get a huge amount of people and make a team and win games constantly lol.

Firstly, I didn't cite Wikipedia, Burnout did.

Secondly, after a bit of research, there seems to actually be two conflicting viewpoints on what it actually means (yes, 'my' version is not 'made up by me and a few other nerds'). My understanding is as I've already stated that free-to-play means 'a game that is free to download but optionally includes extra content to make the game better', and I see that there are others who believe free-to-play means literally free to play.

It has become apparent to me that 'free-to-play' as a term has evolved. Your distinction appears to hold weight in that it started out as a widely used term in the PC world, particularly with MMOs. However, it seems that an awful lot of major game journalism reports on "free-to-play" as being an intially free game that includes bought content.

Look at this for example. Here they state Happy Wars is the first ever free to play game on XBLA. If free-to-play still meant what you say it does, then wouldn't Dash of Destruction, Yaris, Crash Course, Harms Way, Totem Ball all have been 'free to play'? But nobody ever discusses them as such - they were just free.

Here is an article that may be of interest, which mentions the free-to-play business model:

Last month a Develop report revealed Microsoft was talking with developers to discuss free-to-play game deals.

The idea is that games can either be monetised by in-game items or premium upgrade costs. Xbox 360 will incorporate a micro-transactions service using Microsoft Points, the report claimed.

Oh, and that's from Eurogamer by the way. Think they're a big enough company that we can safely say that this stuff wasn't just made up by a few nerds.

I'd just like to point out that all other free-to-play Live Arcade games so far (ie on Windows Phone 7) have also all included micro-transactions. Similarly, the free games that don't have any buyable content (Sudoku, Minesweeper, Shuffle Party) aren't referred to as 'free-to-play', just free.

Basically, it seems that Microsoft are now using the term "free-to-play" as the new name for "freemium".
