Character save corrupted - Question

I was level 42 and my save got corrupted.

I joined a game with my mate whose level 18, and I chose new character. When I entered the game I was also now level 18. I play with other people who are level 30ish so if I join their game I presume I will start at whatever level they are. Would it count towards the level 50 cheevo using this method or do I have to start again?

Obviously knocking off twenty levels is gonna be quicker than starting from scratch

Given the buggy nature of the game, I made regular backups to a memory stick.
I had to play through as Logan twice on Act 1 before it would give me the Right 4 life achievement.
Although I deleted that particular save and started again it kept my original rank which at the time was 17

Probably best to start from scratch. It doesn't take that long to get through the game especially if there are 3/4 of you

Weird thing happened after asking my original question.

I started again and was nearly level two. Some mates come online who are halfway through act 3, I join their game at level 1. Rank up to level 2 straight away, rank up again, then as im nearing level 4, it says I have skill points to use I click up on the D-pad it now says im level 12, with 9 unlocks????
