Do you find the Cantonese enjoyable or annoying?

As a local in Hong Kong, I seriously LOVE those stuff!
But as someone who know nothing about Cantonese, are you enjoying?
Just out of curiosity.

Most of the dialogs outside storyline(cutscenes) are very natual and local unlike past games like Stranglehold and Jet Li: Rise to Honor.
I am actually very surprised that they put in so many different dialogs.
And you basically can't hear any English on the street.
This makes me feel like home, really.

But as someone who don't know Cantonese,
Walk and drive on the street, and you will be surrounded by "alien language.
You don't even know what people say when you hit their car or even their face!

I know I talk too much. So what do you think about those Cantonese?

P.S. I know some people may think that United Front Game failed to replicate Hong Kong. Well, no I don't think so. But I will talk about that another time.

yeh i like it, it makes it feel much more genuine. i think would be weird if they all spoke English on the streets. it would start to take away from the fact that it is in Hong Kong, it might as well be set in a massive Chinatown in America!
so yeh i love it, and having shit loads of bright signs everywhere that i can't read, i like that too! again, adds to the feel.
though having said that about the dialogue, by far my favourite street person is the pork bun man!!

Think I might create a translation of those signs, dialogues, songs and everything.
But it's gonna take forever.

Pork bun men are fun. But they are probably the most not-local.
Clearly American/Canadian Chinese are performing for those.
Those accent are fun though.
BTW, hawkers like that don't actually exist in Hong Kong.

I pretty cool to hear American hip hop songs redone in Cantonese. Although I have no idea what they're saying. Plus I've learned a few swear words along the way.

The Cantonese is annoying to me because they speak half English and half Cantonese in the same sentence a lot of the time. It's stupid. I'd like it if they just spoke one or the other.

Also there are times when Wei will speak English to someone and they speak in Cantonese. It's like they didn't know what to choose so just do whatever. It's annoying. I would have preferred everyone speak in one or the other and not mix it up so much.

It's pretty common in real life. Switching between languages, using different languages in one sentence.

I'm sure in the game they're doing it for effect though.

I'm not a fan of the language at all. It reminds me of Vietnamese and I didn't care for it when I was there. But in this game, it adds a realism that I do like. And it should be in it.

The thing is with some of my friends who speak English as a second language, there are certain words that don't translate well into English or don't have the same meaning, so my friends often say a few words in their native tongue in a sentence.

As for the Cantonese i like it. I recently spent some time in Hong Kong so the Cantonese makes the setting much more believable. I can also understand a few of the words every so often

I too am a Hongkonger, and I must say I'm impressed they actually found Cantonese-speaking voice actors for the game. I'd much more prefer some of them speak entirely in Cantonese or English though, as it makes the dialogues more natural.

But I entirely love the game, and in my opinion they did an excellent job in 'copying' Hong Kong into a game.

Oh, I also noticed they really used a lot of swear words, but I never use them so I needed to get used to it when playing the game.

Eh it's better than it being completely in Cantonese. I would hate to read nothing but subtitles, no big deal

I personally don't like it because in my opion, if you make a game make it all in one language, either just straight English or Cantonese with subtitles

I enjoy it a lot its a nice touch recently i moved to Spain and i am studying Spanish i find i speak in Spanish but from time to time when i swear i do it in English which i've noticed they do in the cutscenes of this game.

One thing that annoys me is... When ur character is speaking with another and they are both talking to each other in completely different languages, small sentences sure but idk, i only speak english and a bit of Spanish atm but i am sure talking like that would be confusing as hell especially when the character he is speaking in English too does not seem like she would know much english at all.

Same here. As I'm a native Cantonese speaker, hearing English most of the time and then suddenly hearing a few Cantonese swear words is just so unnatural.

I in fact like the way they handled Mrs. Chu's language - all Cantonese.

Why can't they record two different sets of voice tracks, one completely Cantonese and one completely English? Or at least keep all the characters' choice of language the same throughout the entire game?

I'm afraid I have to contradict you there.

English is definitely not as prevalent as Cantonese in Hong Kong, and we Hongkongers only occasionally mix a few English words into our daily conversation.

For example, we Hong Kong people may say '你check咗今日schedule未?'
It literally means 'you check-ed today schedule yet?'

Or we say '可唔可以幫我scan個file?'
It means 'can (or not you) help me scan the file?'

We never say the entire sentence in English. Only foreigners speak entirely in English.

I didn't mean AS prevalent, but definitely more prevalent than other Asian cities, such as Tokyo. Perhaps my phrasing could have been a little better.

For me, it added an authentic feel for the game. Of course, knowing not a whit of Cantonese and never having visited Hong Kong, I really have no place saying how authentic it actually is. But still, the tonality of Chinese does give the dialogue a certain vibe, and it might feel weird if it was entirely in English.
