how is the four way game play??

It's all co-op. Four against the game. It's pretty fun, if you know everyone, so you won't have any one a-hole grabbing everything for themselves. I used to play with another friend and that was fun too. After level 35, I never played it solo again...even in all of the DLC.

This is very true. Play with people you know, or maybe some of the folks you meet on this site. Ive played with many people from this site, and never had any problems with any of them...not yet anyways

To play 4 player co-op do you have to do 2 on a box and then have the other 2 join through xbox live or can you do 4 on one box? I have a few friends who are willing to play but they are too cheap to buy the games for themselves.

I haven't actually tried 2 people on 2 consoles, but I can tell you that the splitscreen only works for 2 people at a time. I think you can go online if you both have Live tags, but I'm not positive about that one.

I can confirm that you have to have your own copy for each box to play over xbox live. Borderlands 2 allows split screen and xbox live play simultaneously but Borderlands 1 does not. So if you're looking to play 4 player co-op you'll need 4 games and 4 boxes.
