Registering player problem

hi guys, i just got this game and i am trying to play it but after signing in with my profile it tells me that i am not connectet to the xbox live (i dont have a cable to connect my xbox, and i do't want to) so after it loads my profile it says error registering player returning to menu.
if i dont have xbox live connected cant i play the game?

(it seems prety stupid to say the truth because even the multiplayer games like brink and other games let you play in single player without having a connection)
