Question about "Step by Step"

The description for "Step by Step" reads:

"Beat a Boss without making a mistake in co-op"

Does this mean neither player can make a mistake? If so, how difficult is this with one person playing alone and using two controllers?

Play with one controller and just before the last cut scene switch the second one on. it works for all levels.
