I'm in the thieves guild and need to do a bunch of jobs for the 30G, but i kinda want to do other stuff in the meantime

There are no explicit conflicts like in Oblivion but you may want to check the wiki's specific pages for glitches and keep multiple saves to roll back too.

I was wondering this myself, since I have two "Join XXX Guild" in my quests. I didn't want to get in one and try to get into another, without getting killed, like in a gang. This being my first ES game, I wasn't sure.

Simple answer: yes.

Some of the wiki's say people might glitch if you complete the main story before completing the guilds so the safest thing is do all the guild stuff first. You can do them in any order.

I joined all of the guilds at the start of the game (a bit after killing my first dragon as part of the story) and then just randomly did quests for the guilds depending on my mood. You can be part of more than one guild at a time. They don't care.

You can take a break in the quest to complete other faction quest. They dont really cross into each others areas.
