Multiplayer: are this and Colonies linked?

Meaning: if you get Colonies, can you play Multiplayer with those who have the vanilla one?

Also, are there more people online in this one or in the Colonies version?

No, they can't play together. Colonies can play with PC players though.

Can't tell you which version has more activity.
