Can't reach pigeons and sheild?

In the area before the battle with 100000 romans where the balls are coming down the hill how do I reach the pigeons at the top and the sheild near it?

How did you pick them up amazing? also, I finished the game, how do I get back to that area?

Its a bitch, you have to backtrack a lot through the game which gets tedious. You have to go back past the part where you had the big battle then climb the scaffolding if I remember rightly...
