I just did the Gnome Achievement last night and you CAN DROP him. I threw him multiple times so I could get myself out of situations and shoot the crap out of zombies. Just don't lose sight of him. The Roller Coaster run is tough because you have the chance of getting him to fall, but you can always go back and find him.
I've heard of some glitches where he'll fall through doors and such, but I didn't have problems. I also threw him in the safe room multiple times, and he does re-spawn with you if you die.(At least from what I've experienced.) |

It was more for clarification, had I not done it before hand the way I read was you had to hold him the whole time. Could just be my own interpretation of it. *shrugs* |

My apologize. You don't have to hold the gnome throughout the entire campaign. I can verify what Kitteh said, you can drop the gnome, shoot zombie, smack zombie, slash zombie, blow up zombie, and anything else I missed, and you will get the achievement as long as you are holding the gnome while still inside the helicopter.

It is best to hold onto the Gnome, if you do drop him he may vanish off or get stuck behind something. It's not a full requirement apart from when you get into the helicopter. If it does screw up on you through and a tank smashes the little guy into the middle of nowhere while storming around, your going to be annoyed.
I still have some tweaks to do on this guide, it's not finish. I still have methods to add and a award tile to claim. Thank you to everyone who provided the other various methods, they will be added soon. |

Pretty sure you need a second console and a second copy of the game. If you don't have those, you'll have to do it online.

1. created private game by clicking on "with friends" under the "realism" 2. picked a campaign, easy, and start 3. played all the way through on easy until last chapter 4. when the last chapter loaded, i voted to return lobby 5. edited the game, change it to last chapter of the campaign, and on expert difficulty 6. played the last chapter on expert, and escaped on rescue vehicle result: no achievement I don't know if I did something wrong, but attempting the "realism" by myself had failed.... |

The Glitch Combo (solo player):
Off-line coop with two controllers (split screen). Dead Center Campaign. Choose Realism on easy. Put the second controller to "take a break". Keep playing untill the last saferoom (The Atrium). Don't leave the safe room. Go to Main Menu. Choose again off-line Co-Op on Realism, Expert, Dead Center, The Atrium. Do the Elevator Glitch with the second controller. There should be no hordes, no special infected, just the initial zombies. Clear the area. Gather all the cans near the car. DO NOT pour any gas yet (this is very important). Get adrenaline shot and a boomer bile/pipe bomb. Go to the information panel near the car, you should notice its interactable. Press to activate the horde.Shoot adrenaline. Throw bile/pipe to distract the infected bomb and start pouring those cans. Yo should now be escaping the mall, "mastering" L4D2. SPECIAL NOTE: The second controller should be hiding in the safe room, if the AI takes control it will get out of the room. And mostly get attacked by the special infected and die. But if for some reason, you are at the third floor with your main account behind the elevator and the 2nd controller/AI is alive, it will jump the wooden wall next to the elevator and reunite with your group, this would be helpful since you can make it grab another bile/bomb to aid you even more when pouring the gas. I hope this is clearly explained, when I write too much, I stop making sense in my head

Yep. Just choose co-op realism from start, and then again when switching the difficulty.
I've found that if you go solo and don't mind the split screen, it's better this way since you can take control of another survivor anytime and make him/her hold items you might need later. That way you always have an extra bile/bomb in your team. Also works if you do it in Dark Carnivale, so then you can just take all the time in the world to get to the jesus room and when there, activate the finale with the 2nd controller. Wait, I can't believe I missed this. How can you choose realism offline? I tried looking Realism in the "single player" and "co-op offline", but they're not there. Am I missing something?

The first guide was fine, that's stupid you just deleted it, it had a ton of posts that were really helpful. It wasn't detailed enough? Did you have to explain the campaign achievements and how many chapters there is?

Got the achievement. Whew. Alright, so I can verify that you can get the achievement by yourself with 2nd controller. Just make sure you followed the same steps as you'd play as single player. Make sure the server is under the system link. And exit to the main menu by pressing the start. Don't vote return.

So how do I do the Expert Realism glitch solo? I don't want to use a second controller. I'd like to do it on Parish. If I understand correctly...
-Start Parish campaign on Easy. (Should I select Solo, then?) -Get to the finale level. -Exit to main menu. -Load up Parish finale on Expert. -Finish final level. (What happens if I die? Just wait for it to reset me at finale and go again? Or exit to main menu and load up again on Expert.) Correct?

Thought I would add something. This may have been posted in a thread already about the Gnome, but I haven't seen it. I randomly joined a game at the Finale of Dark Carnival. One of the players had the Gnome and the others were running for the helicopter.
A tank was right next to me as I joined and my teammates were already on the heli. My guy didn't have much health and two tank hits killed me. So the game ended, and I still got the achievement. So I guess if you're part of a team with the Gnome, not everybody has to survive, just the person carrying the Gnome. |

And for what it's worth, Tank Burger was way easier than expected. When going for the "Get a Medal on Survival using only melee weapons" achievement, I wound up the only person still alive, and as to continue trying, I was swiping at the 2 tanks with the sword. As soon as I got incapacitated, everyone in the party unlocked Tank Burger, even though we didn't actually kill the tank. (So I suppose as long as the only thing you attack the tank with is a melee weapon, win or lose, you get the achievement)

Do you have to hold the gnome the entire time or as long as you are holding him as each chapter ends enough?
Normally I would drop him to fight, then pick him back up and run and sometimes switch between teammates carrying him depending on health levels. My teammate last night closed the safe house door while I dropped him to heal, so he it screwed me over. But otherwise during the level, he can be dropped and picked up constantly as long as you are holding him as each chapter ends, right?
