Achievement Guides

How to write your own Guide

Welcome to the new and improved step-by-step guide on to completing your own achievement guides. Before we begin there are a few rules, regulations and changes I'd like to address due to the lack of quality in quite a few recent guide submissions.

IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE

Any guides that are submitted within the first month of a game's first regional release will now be delayed processing. We want to make sure people check their guides properly and catch all mistakes, alterations and updates before submission. This also gives everyone a fair grace period to write a guide over the various release dates.

Please do not submit your guide(s) if they are within the first month of release until you feel 100% satisfied with their quality.

Basic rules

1. Do not post rude remarks or use cuss words within your guides. This site allows moderate swearing but it shouldn't be used within any guides. If you really feel the need to post any profanity within a guide, do not submit it.

1.1. Grammar and spelling are a big issue. Rushing through your guide so that you can submit it before everyone else isn't helpful. Before you make any submissions read through your guide and make sure you catch any mistakes.

2. Take into consideration other users when you write your guides. Using slang, text speech and internet lingo doesn't help anyone if they don't understand it. If you submit a guide that contains any of the above abbreviations or slang you may receive a message from the guide team to correct your wording. Your guide may also be declined.

3. Take your time. The more effort you put into your guide the more it will be appreciated. If you just throw together a guide and expect it to be the next best thing then you need to take a step back and drop the ego.

4. Don't be aggressive towards other users, if someone else want's to write a guide they are allowed. If you posted first that does not mean you own that forum with your guide. Moaning and complaining about other users and their attempts will not be tolerated. This goes for posting comments on other peoples guides also.

The Guide Team

We are here to help process the guides that you submit for the main site. If you follow the basic rules above before submitting your guides it makes our lives easier. You are welcome to ask us questions to learn more about guides or have basic questions answered. You must not contact us regarding your submission and if it will be used on the main site.

Rarely a staff member may ask a guide author to correct certain parts of their guide. This does not mean your guide will be used. If you carry out the alterations it speeds up the processing times.

Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have, we're not always online and we can be quite busy at times so don't be offended if we don't reply.

Stickies

There have been a lot of complaints about users' guides not being made a sticky. In general, guides will not be stuck until they are finished and put onto the main site. If the guide placed on the main site is a combination of several guides, then a mod will make an open thread with a link to the guide on the main site. Please do not ask/report/PM staff for your guides to be stuck. The guide team and mods will determine when a guide should be stuck.

Now that all of the general rules and basic information is out the way lets proceed onto writing and creating your guide.

Submission Guidelines

How to submit your guide

Once you complete your guide and feel it's ready to be processed by the guide team, make sure you submit it in the correct manner.

Lately there have been a lot of users who just submit links or who can't be bothered to proof their guides, so here are a few basic guidelines.

1. Your guide layout should be submitted with the same achievement order that is listed on the site.

2. DO NOT just submit a link to your guide in the forum. If you do so your guide will be declined regardless of how good it is. We don't always have time to chase posts around the forum.

3. When you submit you guides please leave out any image headers and large images. If you use images within your guide please link to them rather than embed them.

4. Please check your spelling, grammar and wording. If you use inside jokes and make constant mistakes through your guide, which could easily be corrected before submission your guide may be declined.

Most of today's web browsers come with spell checkers pre-installed, if you don't have one installing I suggest installing one.

5. We don't need a full essay on why your guide should be used over any other guides. We can clearly see when the effort has been put into a guide over others. IF your guide meets the standards we expect it will be considered.

6. Please break up your road maps from your guide. If you interchange information between your guide and road map please make sure that this information isn't vital to an explanation. If you guide is approved but the road map isn't, this won't help anyone.

7. ALL achievements must have explanations. If a game has only story related achievements you must list that under each achievement, or point them to another achievement. If you decide not to fill out this information your guide may be declined. Just because it unlocks through progression, not everyone will know that. If we don't play the game we won't know that either.

BUILDING YOUR GUIDE

Part 1

Where to start

Before you start writing your guide you need to decide which game your going to write one for. You may also want to check the forums and main site game pages to see if there is already a decent guide posted.

Once you find a game you want to write a guide for e.g Fallout 3, buy, rent or borrow the game and start to work away at the achievements and learn how to play the game.

Not all site guides are perfect and some have become dated due to title updates and various other patches. Re-writing someone else's guide is allowed, but you have to make sure you put the extra work in to make your version worth while.

Note: Starting a guide early for a game which hasn't been released will not be tolerated unless it has been approved before hand. Most game guides either become locked or removed if they are posted before the street date. If you're lucky enough to play the game and have a good understanding of how your going to do the guide check with a staff member to make sure it's okay to write your guide.

Part 2

Learning the basics

Before you can build your guide you will need to learn the basic posting tools. You may already know what some of these do but not know what others do. if you already know this skip to part 3.

http://imgboot.com/images/fizzmatix/panel.jpg

This is the basic editing panel. You are going to become very familiar with these options, the more you know about them the easier it will be to navigate the styles for your guide.

1. Remove Text Formatting

2. Font

3. Font Sizes

4. Text Colour

5. Emoticons (Smiles, Guide Icons)

6. Attachments

7. Undo

8. Redo

9. Increase/Decrease Text Box

10. Change Editing Mode (WYSIWYG Editor or Plain Text)

11, 12, 13. Text styling

14, 15, 16. Text Adjustment.

17, 18. Bullet Points

19. Decrease Indented Text

20. Increase Indented Text

21. Hyperlinks

22. Remove Hyperlink

23. Insert E-Mail Link

24. Insert Image

25. Quote Wrapper

26. Code Wrapper

27. HTML Wrapper

28. PHP Wrapper

All this information may seem pointless but if you didn't know what some of these buttons did you do now for future reference.

Part 3

Guide layouts

This is a rather important step, your guide layout will be the first thing users will notice. If you use a sloppy layout most people won't be interested in reading. This may also cause issues with people understanding how to read your guide which will degrade the quality of your work.

*NEW*

You can either use the follow video guide or follow the screenshots and information below.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1yyrEteEHU]YouTube- How to build an achievement guide[/ame]

Before you can start building on your guide you will need to copy the achievement descriptions and icons from the main site. Go to the achievement page of the game you wish to create a guide for. Highlight all the achievements and right click copy. This seems to work best in Fire Fox.

http://imgboot.com/images/fizzmatix/1.jpg

Go to the forum where you will be building your guide and right click and paste the copied information into the message field.

http://imgboot.com/images/fizzmatix/2.jpg

At this point you will want to start formatting your guide so it has correct spacing and layout for when you start to add information. At this point you will also want to re-order your achievement list and tidy up any extras.

If you paste your information and it looks like the above image but you want just plain text with images and no template formatting press the preview button to remove the excess tables which will vanish when you press post anyhow.

This way you can re-order and tidy up your list before it's seen by anyone else.

http://imgboot.com/images/fizzmatix/3.jpg

Once you have made your first post you will want to reserve more posts by posting a quick reply and inserting "post reserved". Most games that contain 50 or so achievements will require about 5 - 6 posts depending on the detail of the achievements.

Note: There is a 10,000 character limit on your posts so you're going to need more than one post for a retail game. If you are writing a guide for an arcade game 1 - 2 posts is plenty but it's down to the detail you put into your guide.

Long links, embedded images/videos and spaces all count towards your characters, so try not to go over the top with extra spaces and loads of images.

Just make sure you reserve enough posts and if someone posts in between ask them nicely to delete their post so you can keep the guide as a whole.

Here is a basic layout of how a guide should look for each achievement:

Achievement explanation here.

_________________________________________

This is considered the basic layout for a guide. You can order the achievements however you want but make sure they follow some sort of order.

If you're still uncertain about the layout of your guide please view the following guides to see further examples of how to create a layout:

Gears of War 2

Need for Speed: Shift

WET

HINT: The latest trend seems to be using bright colours for your guides explanations and descriptions. This can make your guide very difficult to read, so if you feel the need to use colours within your guide please make sure they are none primary colours such as these; Green, blue, red.

While making your guide you want want to make further additions such as videos, images, maps and other helpful information. We do not discourage use of any material but if it is linked to another website it would be best to post a link to their image rather than embed it. If you can gain permission from the site hosting the images, you can have the images hosted here on x360a.

Please contact Fizzmatix to find out more about image hosting.

Part 4

Images & Media

Adding images and videos to your guide can help explain things which may be difficult to describe. Such as locations or how to pull of complicated techniques. When using images in your guides make sure they are no wider than 600pixels. If they need to exceed this site make sure they are links and not embeds.

To insert an image you can either press the small picture button and insert your url to the image or you can use the plain text editor and type in the following tags around your image URL: url here[/url].

If you want to add a youtube video to an achievement you can with ease. Make your way to youtube and copy the video URL. Just insert the URL anywhere on your guide and it will be converted into a youtube player and styled. Here is an example so you have an idea of the final output:

Writing your guide

By this point you probably just want to get on with the guide writing and get to the fun part of putting your guide together. You should have played through most of the game by now to get a general idea on what to write for your achievement explanations.

Spelling & Grammar

Make sure you write to a standard which doesn't involve internet abbreviations and text message language. If people can't understand what you're trying to explain then your guide won't last long.

Basically if there is a full word use it, don't use U instead of you or R instead of are. Phrases like OMG!!ZZ!Z and LOL!!! may be accepted between yourself and your friends but there not accepted as the correct way to write a guide.

If you feel the need to express yourself and explain things in such a way, please do not submit your guide as it will just be passed back to you for corrections. You not may be given a chance to alter or update your guide to make it fit within the guidelines for use on the site.

This also counts towards jokes, smiles and any other misleading information. You want other users be able to to read your guide and understand how to do something without feeling confused.

Achievement Descriptions

At this point you should be thinking of how to explain each achievement with ease. Some are easier than others but there are some fairly obvious mistakes or poor explanation choices, which either look careless or can be misleading.

Just remember, the less information you put the more confusing a guide can be if you do not label everything correctly.

Here are a few examples of good and bad choices:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/1140/+ojvjA==.jpg Defuse the bomb, level 2 - 10http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/g-icon.gif

Find the bomb on level 2 and defuse it within the given time.

Poor

Do as the achievement tells you do.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/1140/+ojvjA==.jpg Defuse the bomb, level 2 - 10http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/g-icon.gif

Find the bomb on level 2 and defuse it within the given time.

Okay

The bomb is at the end of level 2, defuse it and complete the level.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/1140/+ojvjA==.jpg Defuse the bomb, level 2 - 10http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/g-icon.gif

Find the bomb on level 2 and defuse it within the given time.

Excellent

You will find the bomb at the end of level 2. Walk up to the bomb and hold down :xbut: to defuse it. You have 2 minutes to do this, as long as keep moving and make your way past the few enemies you shouldn't have any issues beating the time.

The achievement will unlock once you complete the level.

_____________________________________________

This is just a basic example of how some explanations turn out depending on who is writing the guide, and how much time and effort they have put into it. If you put the extra effort into your guide it will pay off in the long run.

Every achievement must have an explanation, if you earn an achievement for completing each level refer to the last achievement for completing levels and explain in full what you need to do.

Example:

Complete xx level

See "Complete 12th level"

Complete 12th level

You will earn all of the above achievements by completing each level. Include tips and other general information here as well. Some levels/difficulties may require a tips list to let the user know how to tackle the challenge.

There is no need to explain everything you have to do in each level as you can sum up all of the information in one achievement rather than make the user read through 10 different ones.

Graphic Buttons

These buttons are here for to you use within your guides so whoever is reading can see what buttons to press clearly. :xbut: is much easier to see and read than placing an X in the middle of your explanation. Make sure you use these buttons as often as possible. If you already know about these buttons you may not know about the new way to use them.

:abut: :bbut: :xbut: :ybut: :lbbut: :ltbut: :rbbut: :rtbut: :back: :start: :dup: :dright: :dleft: :ddown: :ls: :rs: :gsicon:

You can find the full urls and BB codes either via the remote or by clicking here.

Finalizing & Submitting

By this point you should have completed your guide and gone though every achievement to make sure everything is correct. Before you submit your guide you may want to check through this list to make alterations and corrections. Make sure your guide fits the following criteria:

[ ] Spelling & Grammar

[ ] Correct Formatting

[ ] Used button images

[ ] Ordered your guide

[ ] Proof Read your guide

If you have taken the time to do the above list you should be well on your way to a successful guide. Proof reading your guide is the most important step so that you pick up on any mistakes, typos and errors in your guide.

If someone points out an issue with an achievement, address the issue and resolve any problems users are reporting. If any achievement is touchy or has a bug issue, make sure you clearly label it within the guide.

If you are happy with your guide and feel it is up to a decent standard then you can move onto the final stage and submit it to through the Submit forum. Your guide will then be passed onto the Guide Team for processing.

General FAQ

While reading through this I'm sure some of you have questions you want answers to. Here are some of the most general questions we get asked on a regular basis. Hopefully you will find the answer you're looking for.

My guide was posted first, surely I'm the only one allowed to make the guide for xx game?

This website is based around a community. We do not stop users from making a guide, arguing with someone and calling dibs on a guide isn't allowed. Any behavior surrounding this sort of behavior will not be tolerated.

Just to elaborate on this:

  • Anyone can write a guide
  • Your guide may be declined over another users, even if it is made sticky
  • Any rude behavior towards other guide writers isn't tolerated
  • Anyone can re-write a guide at any point

What rewards do i get for writing a guide?

You will earn yourself a forum award. Either a Bronze, Silver or Gold Submission badge. This will be displayed under your gamercard and avatar on the left hand side of your posts. If your guide is at such a high level you may also earn the A+ award for your efforts.

Once your guide has been accepted, you will be credited on the site for writing a guide and have your name posted in the biweekly "Achievement Unlocked" news post.

If your writing and guide talents are superior you may even be asked to join the Guide Team.

Are there awards for writing Road Maps?

The same awards apply for road maps as achievement guides. You will either earn a Bronze, Silver or Gold award depending on how many you write.

What do these awards look like, and what are their criteria?

You will earn the following awards for your efforts on the site. Some are easier to work towards than others, remember this isn't a race to earn the awards. Take your time and put as much effort into your guides as possible.

Road Map Awards:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/images/awards/th_mapbronze.jpg Road Maps - Bronze

This user has submitted 3 road maps to the site.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/images/awards/th_mapsilver.jpg Road Maps - Silver

This user has submitted 6 road maps to the site.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/images/awards/th_mapgold.jpg Road Maps - Gold

This user has submitted 10 road maps to the site.

Road maps are the useful breakdowns at the top of each guide. Not all guides have them but your efforts will be rewarded for making these additions.

Guide Writing Awards:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/images/awards/achguide-bronze.png Bronze Achievement Guide Submitter

This user has submitted 3 achievement guides to the site.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/images/awards/achguide-silver.png Silver Achievement Guide Submitter

This user has submitted 6 achievement guides to the site.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/images/awards/achiguide-gold.png Gold Achievement Guide Submitter

This user has submitted 10 achievement guides to the site.

You will need to work hard to earn all these awards. It may seem like an easy task but you will only make it this far if you put in the effort.

Additional Awards:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/images/awards/th_athreadaward64jpg.jpg A+ Thread Award

This user has created a thread which shows incredible effort and dedication on their behalf.

This awards is only issued when a user has exceeded the superior level of guide writing or thread making. This award is not linked directly to guide writing, so do not expect to earn it unless you do something out of the ordinary.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/news/guideawardbig.png Staff - Guide Team

This user is part of the guide team on X360A

If you are on another level of guide writing, you may be asked to join the guide team. Not everyone will be invited, so welcome to the team as you have been selected out of the 300,000+ users on the site.

Can my guide be made sticky even though it's not finished?

No, guides will only be made sticky when the guide is complete and has been approved by a MOD or Staff member. Make sure you put in the extra effort, some guides are made sticky but have later been removed due to another guide being at a higher standard.

I found an error within an achievement explanation/guide, what do i do?

You can either submit the corrections via the submit forum or post in this thread.

I wrote a guide for a game with multiple entry's on the site. Why are there multiple game entry's and do i get credit for each game?

Some games have multiple releases in different country's/platforms. If you write a guide for one of these games you will be credited with one guide. Your guide may show up over these multiple game listings but they are effectively the same game.

Sometimes there are different lists, but this is very rare.

Why was my guide removed from a sticky, and why do i share joint credit for my guide?

Someone else has probably re-written the guide for that game. This isn't uncommon, they have updated and produced a full more informative guide over the one you wrote. They also have submitted the guide to the site and had it approved.

You still hold credit for the original guide, whoever made additions has been credited and rewarded for their efforts.

Why is this xx guide on the site, it's so poor and isn't useful?

The guide is probably an old guide which needs updating. Rather than complaining about it why don't you put in the effort to make it a good guide.

Can i use copyright images in my guide?

No, all copyright material unless sourced through taking screenshots or making your own images are not allowed. Anything that has been scanned from a magazine or official guide will be removed. We cannot use any material that is sold and distributed on a commercial level.

I want to create my own guide layout, can i do this and submit it that way?

The guide layout/template we suggest is preferred, you must submit your guide in the correct way. If you really feel the need to go outside the current layout and it doesn't go over the top it isn't an issue.

Just remember you must submit the guide with the correct formatting and list the achievements in the same order on the website. If you want to create the extra work for yourself you can.

Are profile glitching/trading and other such methods allowed in guides?

No!, we have a strict policy on breaching Microsofts TOS, if it goes against their agreement and may cause users to be banned it isn't allowed. You may also be banned for using and explaining how to do such techniques.

I want to breakdown my guide into a quick walkthrough, is that allowed?

You can write a road map for the guide your currently working on. This will be displayed at the top of your guide if it's accepted.

Do not refer achievements to your road map as if your road map is declined the information in your achievement may go misunderstood.

You can find a whole walkthrough on how to write road maps Here.

I have a question about writing a guide.

Lets say I platinum (platinum is equivalent to 1000/1000 in trophies) a game. Once I have all or almost all the trophies and write a guide for the sister site. I look over here to see if there has been a guide yet and their isn't. Would it be acceptable to make the necessary conversions to the guide, such as button changes, and then post here. I'll rent the game for the 360 just to make sure everything is accurate.

It's been done in the past and we haven't had any issues. As long as the guide is decent and accurate it doesn't matter so much. If there was a huge obvious difference in the way the game played and resulted in different results than it wouldn't go to well. But seeing as there are very very few things that differ through most games i don't see it as an issue.

Great guide here, it's beeen very helpful. I have been using it to create a guide for MX vs ATV and have one quick question. I currently have 850G in this game but I'm wondering if it's a rule that you must have 1000 to get a guide submitted. I should be able to get up to 985G but one of the achievements requires me to beat 11 Xbox Live players in one race which is too difficult without boosting and this game is practically dead online. Just wondering, will I actually have to get this achievement for the guide to be put on the main site.

The short answer is no. We prefer that you have the majority of the points in a game before you write a guide, but if you don't have one or two of the achievements, we understand that that happens from time to time.

Thanks for this Fizz!

I would really love to write a guide one day and it would be perfect like you've show (as I have a bit of OCD I like stuff to look perfect) but I never really get a game early or enought time to write one up.. Hopefully one day I will but it will most likely be a XBLA game.

With the awards, Would sticky threads that I've made be worthy of the A+ award? I made the Weapons Trading Thread in Borderland which as been a helpful, so would that be worth it? If it isnt I dont mind but I'm wordering what rreally counts.. Something helpful or so forth?

Thanks again for the info!

sweet thanks for the help fizz should be helpful now i can write em. also how do you change your profile im new

You need a minimum of 10 posts to edit your details. This was a recent alteration to the site to stop spam bots from abusing the community.

Thanks for this Fizz!

A+ awards are normally only given out for the extra effort. Sticky threads for trading and discussion don't really count. I don't really know the full criteria of what you would need to fill to earn the badge. Mostly it's staff recommendations and suggestions that lead to users earning this award.

You could earn it from an extensively written guide or for writing a very helpful thread. If you add and help the community you may earn it one day but i can't really tell you what you need to do.

*Guide Update*

I have just added a video tutorial on how to build the basis for your guides. The audio is a little rough but it should help people who are having issues. Using Firefox is also the best way to format a guide

So I guess I just have 2 quick questions here.

1. Are we not supposed to post now if we are working on an achievement guide?

2. Is there no longer an official list of completed guides?

1). People can post their info if they want to. I don't really see the point in people posting lists of what guides they're working on though. It just seems like another way for people to say okay, i'm doing this guide no one else can. If you see where I'm coming from.

2). The completed list would be rather ridiculous to keep up with, but there is a list on the main site here, here and here.

I would probably need 20 posts to cover that whole list, keeping it up to date would also be a nightmare.

I'd made a list a while ago that had games that needed guides/roadmaps but had lack of support from staff because of the existing list. Now that its done away with...

Anyways. Good job on the guide about guides and thanks for the prompt reply :)

EDIT: I've started it up again (through edits of course, no need to spam it to the top of the board) even if I'm the only person that gets any use out of it :p. Currently a bit of a work in progress thing. If anyone is curious about seeing it I can provide the link on the condition that it isn't spammed and closed :)

I remember the list, i think the main reason it wasn't used or really taken on board is due to the generated report on the main site. It would also take so much effort to keep it up to date unless a staff member kept on top of it. Seeing as we have access to all the information most other people don't, like which guides have been used and when they go active.

Great guide for writing guides. I have one small complaint though. In the sticky section of the first post you say it is OK to use the nuke button to ask for a sticky. I did so and was told not to do it. Maybe you could check with someone about the accuracy of that? Its not a big deal, they weren't really mad or anything, would just be nice if everyone was on the same page about it. Again, very helpful info here.

I have never really had an issue, then again i do it from time to time but the other staff may not mind because I'm also a staff member.

I was always told by several others if i wanted a mod to sticky a thread to report it. If one or several the mods comment on this though I'll remove it from the guide.

I have a bit of a question x360a overlords...

I recently submitted a Monster Madness guide, but it did not get posted.

Normally, I'd take a look at it again and make changes, but here's the thing:

There was a guide already, but said past guide was poorly done, contained incorrect information, and the user has since been banned from the site.

My guide however, goes into significant detail, has gotten highly positive feedback and revisions, and I am currently the highest gamerscore holder for that game on the site. Minor detail, but I'm trying to show I really know what i'm talking about.

I'm not complaining, i'm just confused.

Other than that very detailed, I like!
