Bungie Divulges New Details on Halo 3: ODST

Speaking to GamePro, Joseph Staten, writer and creative director of Halo 3: ODST, has revealed new details regarding the story and gameplay mechanics of the game. Here are some highlights:

You won't ever meet the Chief. Basically, Halo 3: ODST happens while the Chief is away from Earth -- after he leaves for the "Delta Halo" in Halo 2 and before he crashes into the jungle at the start of Halo 3. ODST doesn't cover all the Chief's absence. But it does fill a very interesting part of that gap.

Like the Chief, the Rookie never meets the villain. Put that in your speculation pipe and smoke it, Halo fans!

A lot more tactical, which is to say you need to think before you engage -- decide how you want to take apart an encounter before diving in or you'll get into trouble pretty quick, especially on higher difficulty levels. Unlike a Spartan, an ODST doesn't have shields. You're a little slower too, so if you get hit you can't just run sprint to safety. The golden rule of ODST combat is "look before you leap."

The silenced SMG is just one of the tweaks to the Halo 3 sandbox that make ODST a stealthier experience -- one that, at least in the open environment of nighttime New Mombasa, rewards a more measured approach to combat. As a non-Spartan, you'll need to be careful about the fights you pick, especially when you're on your own. Luckily the silenced SMG excels at dropping unwary, unshielded enemies.

I believe this "Silenced SMG" isn't going to be all its hyped up to be, people won't stop talking about it, like its going to be better than a Battle Rifle or something.

Halo 3 ODST is going to be the same exact thing as Halo 3.

One feature Bungie should think about would be optional silencer attachments for most of the ODST arsenal. Obviously this wouldn't include stupid things like a silenced bullet-hose, sniper rifle etc.
But if they did a silenced battle rifle, then, ooft, would they have a beautiful piece of technology there. In my opinion THAT would be oh-so-much better than the normal battle rifle.

And did you not just read the article above? It obviously is.
It'll probably be a Rainbow Six/Halo cross breed.

I don't get why so few people are complaining about how useless and pointless this game is, but so many people complained about Vegas 2 and Gears 2. I hate people.

Therefore killing the only thing halo is good for.

run about, shoot, hide to recharge sheild
rinse & repeat.
thats the only reason halo is different from the likes of COD/GoW/R6V2

It seems to me that everyone else has pegged this and you're the one who didn't read. This is looking like nothing more than your run-of-the-mill shooter that, as others have said, is only being released to capitalize on the Halo name.

I'll play it because I like FPS and I enjoy the story behind Halo for the most part, but without shields and the ability to jump 10 feet in the air, all it is is another modern FPS, much like RSV2 or Modern Warfare 2, just with Halo weapons instead of "real" weapons (which all of the Halo weapons have their "real" equivalents, i.e. the BR similar to an assault rifle on 3 shot burst, SMG is a SMG, a sniper is a sniper etc.)

I've always loved playing through the Halo 3 campaign, so i think I will thoroughly enjoy this add-on.

To mix it up a bit, I've been trying to beat the campaign on legendary with all skulls active. You guys should try it sometime. To say it is a challenge would be the largest f-ing understatement of the year. So, yeah, I'll be pretty happy once this comes out.

I dont know about you guys but I think about it this way.
Just because a game is different, gameplay is easier/harder, and they have easy achievements (although thats a positive) is not the reason. Im looking forward to the game whether its easy or not. 1. It has the Halo name, produced in part by Bungie, you know its going to be good. 2. BRAND NEW STORYLINE. The main reason I play video games.

I'm a dedicated Halo fan and I think this and Reach are going to be fantastic editions to the Halo Archive.
