This Ranking System Took Place During November 7, 2008 - March 24, 2009 Before Title Update 3. Good Riddance!!!

UNDERSTANDING YOUR RANK

Let’s take a moment to look over the ranking system in Gears of War 2, to make sure everyone understands what they’re looking at when they check out other players online. Your rank in Gears of War 2 multiplayer is based on your TrueSkill rating, which calculates the relative strength of all players on Xbox LIVE.

http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/uploadedImages/Community/CM_Blog/GearsofWar2_TrueSkillRanks.jpg

There are five ranks total, and the first rank is achieved after you play your first multiplayer match. The more Gears 2 matches you win, the higher your rank will be, and your rank will go down when you lose matches. Rank is not affected by Horde Mode and private matches. The ranks are displayed in game using the icons to the left.

TrueSkill is like the chess ELO system, which tries to predict who should win the match based on the skill of the players. If you were predicted to lose and your team wins, then your TrueSkill goes up more than if you won and you were predicted to win. This holds true for the inverse scenario: If you were predicted to win and you lose, then your ranking drops more than if you were predicted to lose.

Rank is not a constantly increasing value, such as is typical in role-playing games (RPGs). Your rank may plateau or even drop as it closes in on your correct and accurate skill level. It will probably take tens of Public Xbox LIVE matches for your rank to move in one direction or another, and it may even take hundreds of matches to achieve a skill with the highest rank we offer, assuming you are good enough to get there.

Also, keep in mind that each rank icon represents a specific range or bucket of TrueSkill values, so while your skill is fluctuating in very small increments from match to match, your rank icon will only change when your skill moves from one bucket to the next. Therefore, your rank is not just about number of kills or experience or the amount of time played. It's an aggregated representation of your skill level based on your wins and losses during Public Xbox LIVE matches. And yes, quitting will lower your rank.

EDIT: How i believe the ranking system works in my own words.

Ok the way i think of the ranking system is like this. Pretend your playing a execution game.

If you are predicted to win and you win you get +1 more points towards your rank.

If you are predicted to lose and you win you get +2 more points towards your rank.

If you are predicted to lose and you lose you get -1 points toward your rank.

If you are predicted to win and you lose you get -2 points toward your rank.

This style of ranking apples to every game type besides wingman. For wingman I believe it is ranked like this.

If you come 1st you get +2 points towards your rank.

If you come 2nd you get +1 points towards your rank.

If you come 3rd you get 0 points toward your rank.

If you come 4th you get -1 points towards your rank.

If you come 5th you get -2 points towards your rank.

I think that in most true skill ranking systems there are 50 levels of number ranks like halo 3 and various other games. So i think to level up in gears of war you must get a current level but with every new level the harder it will become harder to level like in halo 3 or Saints Row. So I think you need to be level 1-10 to be rank 1, you need to be level 11-20 to be rank 2, you need to be level 21-30 to be rank 3, you need to be level 31-40 to be rank 4 and you need to be 41-50 to get to rank 5. The numbers are most likely wrong but the main thing was to show you how the ranking system works even more.

(P.S This is all just my opinion and you can believe this if you want but i think this is roughly how the system works. I'm pretty sure the system is more complected than how i just explained it so don't take this to heart.)

EDIT 2: To rank up, you have to beat teams that are ranked higher than yours (Who is predicted to win)

For example, say you and a friend each play one game. Your entire teams are all rank 3. Your team, improbably, plays against a team of all rank 1 players. Your friend's team, in an equally improbable matchup, plays against all rank 5 players.

Statistically speaking, you should dominate while your friend gets a cluster****. So let's say that happens. Since he was playing against players SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than himself, he takes only a modest hit to his rank. And since you were playing against players SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE than yourself, you barely gain any TrueSkill ranking.

Now, let's say you both win your matches. You come out of the matches with IDENTICAL stats. But he gained a substantial amount of rank points because he beat players that were better than him. You may have both won and come out with identical stats, but he ranks up because he beat players that the game thought were better than him. Is it fair? Yes, because he pulled through and beat on experienced players, while you just whooped on newbies.

This is an extreme example, but the same holds true in more moderate matchups, albeit over time. If a team of average rank 3 plays a team of average rank 3.2, the former team gains more experience for winning and the latter loses more experience for losing.

Your K/D ratio, W/L ratio and points are NOT indicative of your rank and shouldn't be used to argue that the system is unfair or to see what your rank "should" be or ask why you haven't attained a certain rank. Just keep winning games. The ones where the system says you'll lose will be worth more and EVENTUALLY you will rank up, depending on who you play. For the record, your stats are significantly better than mine but I have three gold bars. I've beaten a lot of players who also had three gold bars, though.

EDIT 3: How quiting affects your rank as of TU2

I gathered this quotes from various threads on the gears of war forums i dont know which threads they are so you just got to go on my word these are real.

EDIT 4: Ranks being changed in TU3 100% check out some details here

Hey all,

So we've been looking at all the feedback on our skill ranking system and we completely understand why simply making your TrueSkill level visible can be frustrating. The algorithm is complex, so it's not always clear how your rank will be affected by a particular match and your rank is based on the team's outcome and not necessarily your individual performance.

So we're looking to make a change.

What if, instead of skill rank, we instead showed your experience level. You would gain experience through your individual performance in Public multiplayer matches - the higher your score at the end, the more experience you acquire. Of course the experience gained across the different match types would be balanced so you couldn't just grind on the respawning game types to try and level faster. The experience requirements for each level would grow with each level gained (like a typical RPG) and we'd have 99 levels of experience for you to show off your leetness.

Generally speaking your level will always go up since you're always acquiring more score, hence experience, with each completed match. The only exception to that would be people quitting. Players that quit would gain an experience penalty that could cause them to be demoted. At the end of every match you will be able to see how much experience you've gained and how much further you have to go till the next level.

Since I know what one of the first questions is going to be, initially we wouldn't have achievements for gaining experience levels because of Xbox LIVE rules that require all post release achievements to be tied to new DLC content. But when new DLC is released, it's a whole new ball game then. http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

So, what do you think?

Thanks,

Rod.

Gears of War 2 Ranking System Confirmed 2.0 A.K.A. TU3 Ranking System

In General How The New Ranking System Will Work (Before TU3 Came Out)

- The new ranking system is going to be very different from the first ranking system because the last one was running off of true skill ranking which a lot of the time can be very frustrating and confusing at times. It is run off of complicated mathematics that are misleading. The new ranking system is run of of experience points which is similar to Call of Duty 4 and 5's system. Basically the more games you play the higher your rank because there is no way to lose points other than to leave the game. You gain points over every game you play which add up to reach a new rank when you successfully have gain the amount of points needed. The experience requirements for each level would grow with each level gained (like a typical RPG) and there are 100 ranks being that 100 is the highest.

What happened to my Rank?

Here is how to prevent losing your rank and achievement data.

Do not shut down your console or launch the Dash in the middle of a game. Quit to the main menu. All save data is stored in the profile, and quitting prematurely can corrupt the Gears 2 data in the profile and therefore effectively reset it. There are several times that a game saves a significant amount of data. This happens after you cancel matchmaking ("Updating: Network settings are being updated") and when you hit a checkpoint in the campaign "Saving: Please do not shut down your console"). But there are also several quick saves that happen in SP and MP, such as when you pick up a collectable or earn progress towards an achievement. Quitting out or shutting off the console prematurely is bad. The safest way to exit Gears of War is to quit to the main menu first.

Here is a quote from Rod Fergusson him self:

"Ok so it looks like two different things are going on here and people are mixing them together. Here's what we know -

1. Just MP level gets reset.

This is an issue where after you have upgraded to TU3 on one box, you play on another box that has not yet been upgraded and so it throws out all the new TU3 data in your profile. This one is not really fixable because it would require us going back in time and making the released version aware of the new data and not throw it away. Since we track matches played, we're investigating ways of restoring player levels in a future title update, even if it's not 100%, it should be better than nothing. We're really sorry for this issue but at the time of release we had no idea we were going to change the profile data so fundamentally in future title updates.

2. All achievement progression is lost.

This has nothing to do with TU3 but is an issue we've been trying to fix for some time now. Unfortunately we haven't been able to reproduce it on a consistent basis so we aren't able to confirm that we have successfully fixed it. Essentially it looks like if a profile is loaded during a loading screen (or power is lost while saving) then it's possible for the profile to become corrupted. It's a really tricky timing issue and we've heard it most from people who regularly sign in during the game loading up and not beforehand. This may be why it happened to a few people in splitscreen where the second person signs in while the game has a loading screen up. We're continuing to work on this issue and are investigating what if anything can be done to restore lost data."

Penalties

-When you leave a game you will lose 1500 EXP. This will add up if you continue to quit out of matches. Example: If you quit out of 2 matches in a row when you complete the 3rd then you will lose 3000 EXP. If the the host leaves he only lose EXP nobody else does.

-When you standby or force host the penalty is that you will be banned from hosting for 24 hours. Yes they do not get banned.

good find underdogg, bit dissapointing theres only 5 ranks tho, that means im one away from the highest. Suppose its something for them to work on.

do you mined me asking whats your win/lose ratio? cause mines 0.50 right now and im rank 3 so i want to know what yours is to see how far i am away from my next rank. I know that it isnt real rank on win/lose but it should be some where around that area.

ok this is what im guessing

Rank 1: 1 game (win or lose)

Rank 2: 0.25 win/lose ratio (not exact and this if you go back and forth between wins and loses instead of straight loses in a row then straight win and vise versa)

Rank 3: 0.50 win/lose ratio (not exact and this if you go back and forth between wins and loses instead of straight loses in a row then straight win and vise versa)

Rank 4: 1.00 win/lose ratio (not exact and this if you go back and forth between wins and loses instead of straight loses in a row then straight win and vise versa)

Rank 5: 2.00 win/lose ratio (not exact and this if you go back and forth between wins and loses instead of straight loses in a row then straight win and vise versa)

"It will probably take tens of Public Xbox LIVE matches for your rank to move in one direction or another, and it may even take hundreds of matches to achieve a skill with the highest rank we offer, assuming you are good enough to get there."

I think it also has to do with the amount of games you have played will still having a certain w/l for example (1.0 w/l with 50 games played = rank 3, 1.0 w/l with 100 games played = rank 4)

This is only my guess and i got no proof behind it so don't bash me.

This may be true and I hope so because my W/L ratio is 0.71 and my rank is only the second but ive only played 84 matches so idk we will have to see

so is it gradual wins , or is it when you hit a certain win/loss ratio that you will rank up beacuse my stats are these:

Games Played 94 Wins 56 Losses 38 Win/Loss Ratio 1.47 Kills 679 Deaths 509 Kill/Death Ratio 1.33

and im at rank 2 and stayed tehre for like 5 days, and i been doing so good

I'm the highest rank, the star with wings, and people always say "no-life" RIGHT when they see it. But really I don't play all day, I have a good clan and we only lose matches due to connection or a bad game. I can tell people how the ranking system works now =D Thanks for da topic

orsen any applications for your clan? i cant ever play alone on gears 2 i always get a bogus team and ends with me carrying the team and to lose it all to 5 people chainsawing me at the last minute. If i dont play with my friends in a full party theres no point in playing, so got try outs?
