Stuck in Stage 6

I'm stuck in a section in Stage 6 where I need to drop down and slide (or grind) on a pink straw over a bed of nails. How do I slide (or grind)? I've seen video walkthroughs where players effortlessly do this with no explanation.

Should be able to grind by holding either the X or RT buttons. If I remember right.
