Punch and Grapple minigame - Can't Hold On

Any tips for the grappling minigame? (the one that is like Trading Blows but you have to grapple and slam to win)

The opponent breaks out of 30 or so grapples before one finally registers and the match ends. My score was 0 when I finally did the slam because of all the blocking...
