1k Post-mortem: DBZ Burst Limit

Yeah, you know what, no matter how many people say this game is more cheap than hard and completing it isn't all that and a bag of crisps, I'm still proud of myself for having done this.

I did MK vs DC Universe, I did Dead or Alive 4, all the Street Fighters and Marvel vs. Capcom iterations and completed all trials in SFIV, SSFIV, MVC3, UMVC3 and SF X T even when I didn't need to, just for good measure, but somehow this one feels special.

I really never dug the DBZ games that much, as none of them seemed to properly capture the grandure of some of the fights in the show. Super attacks always felt very limited and never showed that literally earth-shattering potential that's nigh-on impossible to translate to the videogame world without being ridiculously unbalanced.

Being the DBZ nerd that I am, it always felt weird to put Tien or Yamcha up against Super Buu and actually have them stand a chance or actually be better by spamming some stupid move like Solar Flash over and over again.

But the quest for stupidly hard achievements led me to this one, and how I dreaded it. I basically finished it in 2 big bursts of gameplay, one being a general mop-up of easier achievements and the Challenge Mode (including Survival) and the other being all the storyline-related achievements. After discovering a really good method with Broly for Survival I basically powered through both Standard and Custom, finishing in roughly 2 days at a #1 position on both leaderboards.

I actually seemed to dread the storyline achievements more, but once I finished Very Hard and started doing Z ranks on Z difficulty, I noticed I could pull a good 85% of them on the first try. The saga chapters listed as stupidly hard by others were - indeed - stupidly hard. I was nearly pulling hairs by the end of the Broly ones, but I made it in the end.

So yeah, this game is basically a completionist's worst nightmare. You have to finish TWO Survival modes that get progressively harder and every failed try taking you at least 70-80 minutes and then finish it on the TWO hardest difficulties, including perfect fights on the hardest of them all.

It's definitely a rush to finally get this done, and I wish others that end up trying in the near future all the best.

Check the "Broly and Survival" thread a few below this one. I posted up a method there, to complement the others.

It's good to see someone who looks for challenging achievements instead of avoiding them.

Burst Limit's an interesting game. While definately being attainable for those who commit, it has a reputation for being a hardcore 100% which I think is overrated.

The difficulty is a cheap kind that requires a rinse and repeat strategy and the AI in the game is fickle and generally badly designed. I have several hardcore-completionist friends with high Ratios on TA that haven't finished the game even though it's in their abilities to do so. They just don't like the game and refuse to play it.

A TA score of over 5000 (no, not 9000) is disgustingly high for how hard it actually is and I didn't get a feeling of satisfaction when I popped the last achievement. I just felt relieved I didn't have to play the game again.

I was very proud of myself when the last achievement popped. But also relieved I was done playing the game and could finally move on. Although seeing how much time I put into beating it has made me not do that for other games.
