RANT: Chess

How the hell are kids who have never played chess before suppossed to be able to play and win at this? It makes absolutely no f**king sense to me. I play chess, for fun, and I almost lost on Easy to the Griffyndor champion. I can only imagine what some 8-9 year old who has never even heard of chess, that they are hating life. This in my mind is one of the most ridiculous achievements and part to a game that is designed for kids!

Oh, and let's not mention the controls. Jesus H. Christ, the camera is so fu**ed up that I can't believe that people can even put up with this game to begin with...If it wasn't for the fact that I need the points for the GSL, I wouldn't even put myself thru this anymore...

I share your many frustrations with Harry Potter. The controls and the camera are broken.

The Chess has been dumbed down and the AI doesn't play with any sort of agressive tactics- so even a kid should be able to beat them.

I didn't lose once and never felt pushed. Just develop an enemy clearing attack- and then queen rook trap their king.

I used the online chess game trick. Just go to www.chess.com, put the difficulty on hard, and play as black. Mirror what white does as your own moves in the game, and then mirror what black does online.

I agree with the whole chess ordeal, but there are games with a much worse camera and way worse controls.

Gobstones was more frustrating than chess, a hell of alot more in fact. Snake pit and the white marble were no problem, but the standard circle thing made me on the verge of throwing my controller at the tv. Impossible to get the touch needed for some shots, was nearly pure luck winning all the gobstone challenges..

Yeah, Gobstones were a lot harder than the Chess games in my opinion. I didn't have too much trouble with the Chess. If you're having that much trouble with the chess games, just use an online chess game as help. I only had to use it for the Ravenclaw Champion.

But I do agree with the camera rant, it hands down sucks. I had a lot of trouble getting things done with such terrible views. It was really frustrating.

The trick is, for anyone who has experience with Chess, is to play 100% defensively. The Computer is super-aggressive and will eventually just start sacrificing his pieces for pawns and the like. While I beat the Hufflepuff and Gryffindor champs easily, the damn Slytherin kept stalemating me. After figuring out some anti-stalemate strategies, I beat him on my third try. And trust, me I am in no way talented at chess.

I totally agree. I just happened across one of them, and I would accidently knock my stone out all the time and lose one. The computer magically never had that problem. It sucks cause I really don't want to play through the game again on easy or normal or whatever it is just to get back to that point.

Yeah this game was odd, the main game stuff was super easy even on hard mode but the side games were some brutal ordeals.

I will always cringe when I look back on the 3 hours that I spent gobstonning.

Way off-topic:

I don't know how some people had so much trouble with Gobstones. It's, in essence, marbles except there is no chance for human error. The camera allows you to line up shots perfectly and if you plan for maximum force on all your shots you should win easily. The only real 'trick' in it is to not be the breaker for Traditional.

all i do is an essential chess trick that works everytime and defeats any enemy in 4 moves. you can block it in a real game of chess, but they never do in OOTP

Yes they do, they block it all the time. The move you are talking about is called 'foolsmate' It's easy to pull off but its even easier to block.

Whoever thinks that "Foolsmate" or "Scholar's Mate" will work against the computer is sadly mistaken, they didn't make the AI THAT stupid...Also, Fool's Mate is so called because you have to be a fool to be caught in it...it's nothing that the opponent really does, you have to make the dumbest first 2 moves in chess

However, the computer is aggressively stupid, if you just set up a decent defense, they will begin to sacrifice actual peices for pawns...just make sure that you have all of your pawns, and other peices covered and you almost cannot lose, but as for the children playing this game, it's really not fair, but I doubt most of the kids have are achievement junkies like the rest of us, and they are really playing just to enjoy the story

I agree with you on the chess, it took me a while...not to mention the fact that if you draw, EVERYONE WINS! so gimme the damn achievement!!! either way, I must agree with hopesfall on this one...gobstones...was...RIDICULOUS! I actually did break a controller because I was gripping it with such furocity, and I'm not one to usually get mad at games. those little bastards just would not LOSE! My girlfriend and I spent SOOOO long trying to beat that 2nd to last kid, the one who makes you feel like an idiot everytime you do anything.

You don't have to go all the way back, you can play any of the gobstones players at any time, and you can play them even after you beat the game. That's when I actually went around and beat all of them.

This Ravenclaw champion is frustrating me, I even copy the website chess and keep getting stalemated or worse accidentally moving a piece to the wrong spot

Edit: just beat it

I am on the third and final Chess champion and have been for the last 2 hours. I have tried the online chess.com thing, but i find that the King's and Queen's are round the wrong way on the website....

IMHO I thought that the Gobstones were a lot easier than the chess has been so far.
I'm going to try the defensive strategy now though and hope for the best !

EDIT: Tried the safe method and still no joy on this. Going to give up now though as it's 2:30 am UK time and I have been playing this damn game since 10:30 this morning. Will try again tomorrow.... (yawns).

One of the reasons I play videogames is because I've always loathed chess. This is like turning on a Classic Rock channel and hearing N'Sync.

Yes, this chess mini-game being upside down from the chess.com board scrambles my Geometry/Spatial-Reasoning rejecting brain into murderous chaos. It's time for the satanic rites to spill the blood of a virgin chess player. Lemme hit the phone book...

I guess we'll avoid summoning a Balrog, as I just beat the Gobstones and Chess (without using the damned computer which somehow made it harder) within 90 mins. These mini-games still stand as some of the most unfun achievements I've ever earned, however, and will be loathed forever in my hell of unwanting.

Gobstones took me FOREVER. It was the last achievement in the game that I needed, and it took me something like four hours to beat the last champion. Once I got through traditional gobstones though, it probably took me twenty minutes to finish her off.

I personally found the chess to be easy as the computer kept moving the pieces in front of mine and I just took them without errors. I think it was mostly luck though!

I did find allot of hassles when I beat the Original Gobstone Champion. It took me a good 2 hours to final beat her ^_^.
