Starting a new game

So I've played the demo twice and both times I picked a different character with different stats, the first guy had a shotgun and the second a pistol, is there a certain set of skill you need to pick for a different weapon to start with?

Yes. Not sure exactly how it works but I've played thru the campaign twice now 1st time I started with a pistol, 2nd time with a knife. I picked the same character picture both times so it must be dependent solely on the answers you give to the questions it asks
