It required starting over, but I had better luck playing on easy as TOKUGAWA and taking over all the fiefs except for the two original ones occupied by TOYOTOMI. By 1608 I had conquered everything but those two and went into an alliance with TOYOTOMI and skipped my turns until shortly before 1615. I let our alliance expire and as soon as it hit 1615, the battle popped.
