So, unlocking the easy mode

I know this game is easy to begin with, but just to rush through for missing blue orbs and such.
The other games were just to die 3 times and it will ask, but searching around I couldn't find a straight answer on this one, people saying to die on the first 3 levels and use items, others saying easy mode doesn't exist.
So anyone know exactly how to unlock this?
