Reached the ropes

I am trying to do this achievement vs Daniel Bryan but every time he puts me in a submission my guy won't crawl. I am beating the shit out of the left joystick but he won't budge. What am I doing wrong?

i think you have to press the buttons at the same time as moving.

I'm not sure if every submission will allow you or if you have to be close to the ropes anyway, but an icon will pop up and tell you to push left stick to crawl.
