If you're going for the story, I think it's worth the rent, or perhaps buy it used.
As for the online gameplay, I'm not sure if there's people still playing it, but expect some lag issues.
I've sold my copy years ago as soon as I got the Hokage achievement, which I think is VERY hard to get by now.

It's a lot better than Rise of a Ninja, I'll tell you that. Get it if you really want it. It's a great game
