Help with the rope bridge

I'm a little stuck here, some help would be much appreciated. I have the ladder and have located the canvas but can't seem to combine the two. I select the canvas, I see the little puzzle piece but when I select the ladder it just exits back to the helicopter. The same thing is happening with the little spiral by the crack in the wall next to the pond. I select the spiral, it zooms in, I click the puzzle piece and then the crowbar and it exits. Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? I'm digging this game but I'm totally stuck.

Ok it's working fine now. Clicking and dragging items is allowed again. Odd.
