However, the free-to-play concept has not gained much traction in the console game industry. That could be changing, however. This week, Microsoft announced that it would release the first Xbox 360 game that will use the free-to-play business model.

The company announced on its PlayXBLA.com web site that it will release Happy Wars later this year. The downloadable Xbox Live Arcade game is a multiplayer action title from developer Toylogic that features " ... exciting castle siege and magic spell battle action for madcap free-for-all battles in fantasy world settings."

The game will be free to download and play for Xbox 360 gamers who are subscribers to the Xbox Live Gold service. However, Microsoft adds that Happy Wars will let players " ... buy lavishly rendered items at the Item Shop etc. for your character to flaunt your originality on the field of valor."

While this will be the first Xbox 360 game with this kind of microtransaction model, Sony has already released a few free-to-play games for the Playstation 3, including the first-person shooter No Man's Land earlier this year. Sony and developer CCP Games will also launch the highly anticipated sci-fi shooter Dust 514 as a free-to-play game later this year.

Be really interesting to see if this concept takes off, but fair play to the developers. Will give it a try just for curiosity sake, after all it is free so what have you got to lose.

Based on the trailer alone, that looks like it'll be really fun. Might be 'too' fun, though, seeing if the customization/loot system is good. And free? I'm in.

Wasn't it Microsoft who said all achievements included in a game on release have to be available without extra purchasing?? or something like that i read it somewhere, unless things have changed now..

This game is REALLY fun!

If you are in the beta I highly suggest you try it out. Just go to the beta section on the dashboard, click on more and it should be there.

I've not been this addicted to a single arcade game in ages! Definitely love the price point (lol), too! Anyone else absolutely addicted? I know feelings are mixed, but I actually 'wanted' to get off CoD today, which I was playing with my friends, to play Happy Wars by myself lmfao! I'm loving the mages! I do have one gripe, though. The "random" buffs are annoying. 2 of the 4 random mage buffs are useless. Fire ftw! I just wish the game was fully unlocked D: Hate the thought of doing all of this again....but I will :P.

The only thing I hate about it, is it's Pay to Win. All of the premium content can easily overpower anyone and make them better than anyone who's tried their hardest to get the items they need. It just irritates me since I've only played a small number of F2P games where this wasn't the case.

I'm not keen on the matchmaking either, with some people being so ridiculously high they can storm the castle on their own.

There's one where you have to acquire a premium item, but you have a very small chance to get one in it's roulette game using in game currency.

You get a premium item by opening a pack of cards

Each pack has 3 items (2 standard and 1 premium) and costs tickets but you get 45 tickets when you start the game which is enough for a few packs
