DMC2 - How come so many of you hate it?
I can't actually remember playing it, but from what I remember it wasn't that bad. Not as good as the first, but still a good game..

I was always wondering that as well. It seemed like it played fine back when it came out. Only thing i can think people hated was that Dante was so quite instead of trash talking, and the games supposed to be easier than the others.

Mainly because his personality changed so much, and the difficulty of the game.

I don't remember hating it as much as people said... but I do know I beat it once and have yet to play it again. Hell, if it wasn't on this compilation I probably wouldn't ever play it again. Meanwhile 1, 3, and 4 I've played over and over on multiple occasions.
The GameTrailers review was saying it's too short, the enemies are dull and unimaginative, and it's really easy. |

It is really easy. The enemies are dull and pretty much just stand around and let you beat their asses.
It's also quite sad that your guns tend to do more damage than your swords and that most of the time, you have to resort to using your guns anyway due to boss/regular enemy mechanics. |

DMC2 isn't a bad game. It's just the weakest of the four IMO. I remember just spamming the pistols through most of the game, and even several of the bosses. When DMC1 came out, I thought it was the hardest game I ever played, and 2 just seemed like such a cake walk after that.

Say what!? IIt’s a watered down version of the first. The first was ground breaking when it came out. So to follow it was a big asks. They failed. It had boring location. It didn’t have the interlaced resident evil type levels. The enemies were boring, the combat was dull and the view was shite. Playing it today some 6/7 years later, iv played that much crap that has tried to copy DMC1 it probably won't seem that bad. |

Admittedly DMC2 wasn't as good as the other 2 in the collection. Got very bored of pistol spamming & I kept waiting for Dante to make some sarcastic remarks, but no. All quiet and brooding & not the Dante we've come to love!
Don't get me wrong, didn't hate it. But I did get through it in a couple of hours... reluctant to play as Lucia, I DO remember hating her back on playstation all those years ago. P.s: Trismagia & Infected chopper just seemed like pistol spam fights with maybe 1 or 2 quick sword swipes. Boring fights. Perhaps I was doing it wrong.. but seriously capcom? |

I don't hate it, but I do dislike it for several reasons.
Dante, for instance, feels clunky. He's slow in avoiding and MUST finish his move before he can evade. It's a pet peeve of mine, but DMC3 Dante feels much more likely to evade when I want it to. Style meter drops WAY too fast. I've had a lot of Showtime!'s disappear on me for no good reason and no, I didn't get hit and I was evading. Speaking of style, it's pretty much impossible to get a proper rating for style on lower difficulties since the enemies are too dumb to go after you, forcing you to hunt them, easily dropping the style you build. Unless you evade to them. :') Bosses are crap and most of them are gunfests. The huge building, Trismagia, that huge moth (Noctpteran?) and Infested Chopper come to mind. With no way that I've found to target what I what to target I'm stuck shooting randomly until Dante decides it's a good time to target the boss. Also, there's absolutely NO incentive to actually melee the bosses I just mentioned. For instance, as soon as I got on the Infested Chopper, it threw me off, all the way to the bottom of the building... Noctpteran is impossible to hit unless it decides to fly low to drop one of its annoying larvae and while I could target the head of that living building, not a single hit actually connected. Just a few things that make me feel that DMC2 is only a run-of-the-mill action game and only a mere clone of the first part. If it weren't for the achievements, I wouldn't have touched it. |

Really hate the auto lock, being forced to use guns majority of time, crappy story, terrible bosses, under powered swords (seems no matter what level, guns are way stronger), the really dumb names for enemies and bosses. Pretty much the whole game is a pile of crap. If it wasn't for the achievements, I wouldn't play this.

i agree with everyone its not the greatest but you are all looking at the negatives it has some positives too.
it added unlockable characters/ 2 playable characters bloody palace mission select hold more of certain items (vital stars for example) you can now level up your guns and swords (though devil arm skills and dt skills are now gone) in a way it helped shape dmc3+4 with these additions and think it really does not deserve as much hate as it gets.

Its also worth noting that whilst locked on with RB you can switch targets by clicking the left stick button if need be.

I didn't hate DMC 2 while I will say it's not as good as 1,3,4 it's not a bad game. I think it gets a lot of shit because 1 was so awesome and then they released 2 which didn't hold the same merit as 1, but people got 3 then so of course 2 was just garbage, to most. I enjoyed the game but I judge on the game itself and don't compare it to 1,3, or 4. Each game had things I liked and things that annoyed me.
Just like I can't wait to play DMC even though it seems to be the spawn of satan game for most. Which I don't understand but oh well.

My biggest issue with the game, other than the difficulty like people have already stated, was the combat system. Some areas felt clunky as hell and played worse than bricks, and other areas were too loose and were hard to even manage a lot of things.
Also, what people have already said with the guns, I personally don't mind that guns were stronger, but the guns didn't really have any variation in it. the entire game was just stand and shoot with the pistols, or jump and shoot with the pistols, which is boring as hell. If you tried to use a melee weapon the game was too clunky and you couldn't really do much. There were also some serious cases of ragdoll physics that screwed up some combos, the few times you would have been able to actually pull off combos in between the rapid fire bullet spam. |

For me, it was just a matter of the enemies and locations not being as interesting as DMC1 and DMC3.
The second I fought an infected tank, I was like "Alright, this is stupid."

Where can I begin?
The story is god awful. Devil May Cry has always had a great story, it has just always suffered from HORRIBLE script writing making Dante come off kind of silly. Devil May Cry 2 didn't even HAVE a story. Excusable. On top of the no story, Dante has nerfed hardcore. He had MAYBE 5 lines the entire game, and each one was so far away from Dantes character that it wasn't even funny. On top of everything, Lucia was stupid as hell. The enemies, bosses, and level designs were terribly boring. None were interesting or fun. A building? Tank? Helicopter? The giant blob of shit at the end? The main villain wasn't even....who the hell was he even? He was a joke. That's what. Pathetic. The ONLY redeeming parts of Devil May Cry 2 were Dantes costume design, desperation devil trigger, and bloody palace. All of which were perfected and made better in the later games except for desperation devil trigger. Game is a joke. I will probably not even play it again. It made me sick purchasing the collection knowing that giant pile of shit was going to making its way back into my house. |

It was good for a hack and slash just not good for a DMC game with the following;
-Enemies weren't original none stick out in recent memory. -Dante felt old. . . . the whole luck thing with the coin. . . and the swan song. It was just bad. - As others have stated guns were the main focus in the game I wouldn't pistol spam but I would certainlly full powered SMG spam you could stay in the air (no DT) for close to 30 seconds with those guns. -no melee related weapons I mean come on. . . .Ifrit was fucking awesome! -Lucia -Lucia -Matria (or whatever the fuck the old womans name was who was this mysterious oracle) -Lucia -No Trish - Final boss (part 1 not 2) could be killed my standing inbetween two of the heads and spamming SMGs into their domes like seriouslly? This is DMC! -Lack of difficultty (I died once on DMD against the dudes with big heads and you fight them on a small platform) -Lack of location everywhere looked bland and depressing. -No taunting! WHAT!!!! No we've got Nero whos taunts take hours to complete but come on! -It didnt add to the DMC lore. as others have stated there ARE good things from the game that were born from it. . . . like Rebelion (which we dont know where that fits into Sparda's story now do we? We never see him using it) and. . . . ask me in a few I'll know the answer. I consider this new DMC to be more worthy of the title DMC then DMC2. EDIT: OH! AND NO FUCKING JACKPOT!!!!! He had the PERFECT opprotunity to say "Jackpot" and he didnt! I remember as a kid playing it I thought thats the most badass thing a dude could say to a demon and DMC2te fucked it all up, it ain't DMC without the Jackpot and has since been used in ever other game. Well, it's not a bad game, it's just the worst entry in the series.
It's the easiest game the series has seen, the enemies' and bosses' designs are questionable, the rewarding mechanism DMC1 has (play better and kill more enemies->get more orbs->buy new skills) is gone, and the only thing you have is a level up mechanism, which is bullshit and doesn't even work and the well-thought and designed secret missions are replaced with secret rooms, which are basically the same room with different enemies to kill, all swords are pretty much the same and the gameplay is bad overall. The story the game has to offer is awful as well. There are some things that I liked about the game: The devil hearts mechanism is quite interesting and fun, the Bloody Palace mode was a great addition and, unlike the story mode, was challenging. I also liked how Lucia actually had a different story mode with different levels, bosses and cutscenes. I also liked how you can play as Trish as well. The game also looks quite good graphics and environment wise. The cons outmatch the pros, making this game just a mediocre game. It could have been a nice stand-alone game, but the Devil May Cry series has a high criteria, thus making it the inferior game. |

My biggest problems with the game have been mentioned. Its far too easy, too many bosses that are just bullet sponges (it just slows the combat down, and makes the game really boring), the level design isnt great, the enemies are all pretty samey, and the swords. The leveling up is pointless, there is no variation in the 3 weapons you get with Dante, and Lucia. You do the same few moves over and over. For me that's the biggest problem. The combat is just so dull. Dante feels clunky and hard to control, and the whole dodge system just seems unnecessary. It feels like the whole acrobatic system they added to the game could have being good, if there had being more reason to use it. But there never really was.
Then you have all the story stuff. Its incredibly poorly told, and makes little to no sense. The dialogue and voice acting is awful. Dante isn't nearly as badass as he was in DMC1. Saying that, I think that the characterisation in DMC1 isn't great either, but you still knew that Dante was supposed to be a complete badass, that you just don't mess with. In DMC2 you get none of that at all! But! Even with so many negatives, I think it introduced a lot of things, that were excellent for the later games, and without them DMC3 wouldn't have been near as good as it was. Apologies for the long post, but I felt like ranting. |

The little I played was just god awful to be fair. Watered down environments and a single sword combo no matter the timing of your attacks? ugh.
I'll probably at least complete it, then see if I should go for the achievements, just need to get the enemy file list completed in the first then I'll move on to it. |

Before I rented the collection I'd only played DMC4.
I've been playing the collection games in order [though skipped the lucia disk for now] and have to say that DMC2 is by far the worst. - You can't change the controls [unlike 1, 3 and I think 4.] - The map is barely functional [why get rid of the character marker from DMC1 which let you see your location and direction?] - The story is terrible. - Level design is bland and can be a pain to navigate due to the map being useless. - The bosses are FAR too easy. - Overuse of the same animations [devil hearts was an interesting addition but using the same animation every time was stupid.] - The final boss just made no sense at all. 4 is a good game, 1 is excellent, 2 is barely passable, 3 [unfinished] is good. |

Nothing is fun about holding X with maxed out guns and having to do it three times or using Lucia. Pile of shit.

I played through a bit of it recently (can't really get to grips with the controls anymore, so can't get into any of them to be honest), I still really don't mind it. Maybe it's because I haven't gotten far enough to overpower my guns haha

Its not that bad, but is really boring and compared to the A and A+ that is 1 and 3, DMC2 is a dull C-, playable, but why would I ever play it when I could play 1 or 3 (or 4 or DMC/5)
