Achievement Progression Question

You know how the game keeps track of achievement progression in the little boxes that show up showing how far along you are. Question is, do you need to be connected to XBL for the game to keep track of that progression?

The reason I ask is that in Halo Reach with the commendations, any progression done in commendations done offline isn't counted towards those stats, so I'm wondering if the same thing is applied here.

example: kills towards getting 500 with magic. Connected to XBL kills count, disconnected kills won't count.
