Are you allowed to save during this and revert back if you get hit?

I don't know but you can easily get it at the start of level 2 on rookie if that helps.

I can confirm that you can save and revert back if you get hit. Just did it when I got hit on #42... Loaded my save and got the achievement about 12 kills later.
