While I see your point, I doubt tapping into the casual market would be detrimental in the long run; because it may even be the opposite.
Remember that a good portion of those who bought the Wii are also gamers in the first place. For those previously familiar with the various flagship franchises that Nintendo offers such as Super Mario, Zelda and Metroid I would think that old Nintendo heads would've bought the Wii for that and not the motion sensor 'gimmick'. Keep in mind that Nintendo is a large corporation, and they've been in the industry long enough to establish a solid base of consumers. Triple A titles such as Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess would be familiar to those people who've played Nintendo's previous consoles and are indeed crowd-drawers.
Add to the fact that Nintendo could've easily turned casual gamers to 'actual gamers' through titles such as MadWorld and The Conduit, it may in turn even spark enough interest to let them dig through the more 'mature' titles on future Nintendo consoles. I know that a larger proportion of Wii owners are probably casual gamers, suffice to say Nintendo would also be fully aware of this. There's no doubt that they'll try their best to retain their casual consumer base for the next-gen, so don't worry about the next 'craze' or the next gimmick; Nintendo's probably already working hard to conjure up the next 'it' thing for the casual gamers of the world.
