Why I HATE the BCS.

I've put a lot of thought into this and I have come to a conclusion. The Bowl Championship Series means well, to give schools a chance to compete on a national championship level. It has worked a couple of times, but it has screwed so many teams out of a spot in the BCS Title Game (IE Auburn in 2004) that the system doesn't need to just be changed, it needs to be thrown out.

This year we have teams in the top 10 that do not belong. I'm not here to rip on anyones team, I respect undefeated records. But some undefeated records are much more difficult to achieve than others.

This week we have: 1. Florida (8-0), 2. Texas (8-0), 3. Alabama (8-0), 4. Iowa (9-0), 5. Cincinnati (8-0), 6. TCU (8-0), 7. Boise St. (8-0), 8. Oregon (7-1), 9. LSU (7-1), 10. Georgia Tech (8-1)

Most people know that the SEC is arguably the toughest conference in NCAA football so I'll start there:

- Florida has had to play, #4 (at the time they played) LSU, Tennessee, and Georgia. They have played really well and deserve this #1 ranking.

- Alabama, there schedule is just as tough, if not more. They started their season with a non-conference game with (at the time they played) a tough #7 Virginia Tech squad. They had a few gimme games, then they played #20 Ole Miss, #22 South Carolina, Tennessee, and #9 LSU (next weekend).
Arguably the best team in the nation they could surely put up a good fight against Texas or Florida.

- LSU may have one of the hardest schedules in the NCAA this year. #18 Georgia, #1 Florida, #2 Alabama (next week), and Ole Miss in mid November. The only game they lost is to the top ranked team in the country. In that game, their offense could do nothing against the Gators stellar defense, but LSU's defense didn't give up much to the Gators powerful offense. It is for sure not a loss that should keep them all the way back at #9.

Now to the Big XII:

- Texas, they also have a tough schedule and have won all of their games thus far. Including huge wins over #20 Oklahoma, and #13 Oklahoma St. They have steamrolled over their opponents and made a very good case for their National Championship hopes.

All the rest:

The Big Ten is usually a force to be reckoned with, but this is a rebuilding year for a few of their schools.

- Iowa has played one top 25 team, #5 (at the time they played) Penn St.
Other than that, they only have to beat a rebuilding Buckeyes team at the end of the season and they are BCS bound.

- Cincinnati, what are they even doing in the top 10!? Congratulations Bearcats you slammed Rutgers, Southeast Missouri State, and Fresno State. They have a win against an up and coming South Florida team. I would hardly call that a National Championship requirement. They will most likely loose to one of the top 25 teams they are going to play in November and December (West Virginia and Pitt).

- TCU, this is the one that really gets to me. There schedule might as well be filled with high school teams. Texas State, SMU, Colorado St., San Diego St., Wyoming, New Mexico (I'm willing to bet that a lot of people didn't even know some of those schools had Football teams). They gave up 21 points to Texas State which is terrible, and they only beat the Air Force by a field goal. There biggest defense for their absurd ranking is a thrashing of #16 BYU, but most college football fans know that BYU is terribly overrated every year. They have to play only one more top 25 team, #19 Utah. They could lose that game, but they could also win and I still wouldn't be impressed enough to put them in the title game or any BCS bowl for that matter.

- Oregon has been impressive this year. They lost to Boise St. at the very beginning of the season and then began a seven game winning streak that involved Purdue, Utah, Cal, UCLA, and the mighty USC. In my opinion they should be ranked a little higher.

- Georgia Tech has had an impressive season as well, winning games against #22 UNC, #4 Virginia Tech, as well as Clemson, Miami, Florida St and Virginia. They have fought hard and played well to make it to #10 so I'll let them slide.

My point is that there are 3 teams that are ranked in the top 10 in the latest BCS rankings that have no business being in the top 15. With the others (Texas, Florida, Alabama, Oregon, and LSU) finishing their seasons against tough rivals and then (for some) a very grueling Conference Championship game I hardly think it's fair that TCU finishes against New Mexico and has no Conference Championship game, Cincinnati has no Conference Title game either.

Does anyone really want to see a TCU vs. Cincinnati for the BCS College Football National Championship game? I know I don't. I have my own idea of what the rankings should be, and how the National Championship could be decided (Top Four Teams in the AP polls at the end of the season, #1 vs #4, #2 vs #3). What do you guys think of these polls? Do these teams deserve to be in the elite top ten? Should either of them be eligible to play in the title game? Why or why not?

Sure, because hopefully that will awaken these greedy-ass college presidents who are preventing the formation of the playoffs in Div 1-A (using the old nomenclature here).

TCU and Cincy? Sure, why not. Undefeated is undefeated. Sure, some teams play harder schedules, but that happens all the time in sports, pro and collegate. Why were are at it, why not have TCU play Boise and call it a day. What Div 1-A should do is adopt Div 1-AA's playoff system. 16 (soon to be 20) teams compete in it. The only thing I do not like is the automatic bids. But, just as with March Madness, I doubt they will be eliminated so, without conference tournaments, automatic bids will come from teams who win their conference or conference championship games (which some conferences don't even have!).

I think the BCS is the worst thing about college football, and until they change that college football will never reach it's full protential.

I think the BCS is very flawed and a playoff system should absoluetly be in place, but undefeated is undefeated to me. Everyone thought Alabama was going to run over Utah last year and the complete opposite happened. You simply don't know if a team belongs or not until they play a great team. Utah was great for college football last year and a few years ago, Hawaii simply didn't belong.

16 Team playoff FTW

I think an 8 team playoff would work. They don't want to make the seasons too long and that will only add 3 weeks. There are a lot of problems with the BCS but it is still better than the old system because it at least tries to create a legitimate title game.

the BCS is gonna cause headaches till they add a playoff there's seriously no point to complain about it.... it's totally uneven how they even do that... the national title game always ends up being a "Home Game" for one school and if an unlucky northern team ends up they're 20pt underdogs from the start... i know they'll never take a title game to the "Horseshoe in Columbus" but it's all marketing the Big 10 isnt as marketable then the SEC or Pac-10 so it's redunant to complain too much =/

but there is a play off needed to say the least it also in the sense help college athletes get ready for a longer NFL season, it's happend several times where a college athlete is exhausted by week 12 and is struggling to finish the season... there's no real downfall in an extended season

I think it should be Florida vs Texas "if" Texas beats Texas A&M, and to be honest, Texas A&M is awesome this year..so idk how Texas is going to get around that game. If Texas loses, then I think TCU should have a chance. GO GATORS!

Texas A&M is 6-5 this year and 3-4 in the conference. They aren't really an awesome team. Texas should be able to beat them and Nebraska to get themselves into the title game. The Gators have a much tougher path with Alabama coming up.

I hope both the Gators and Longhorns stay undefeated and meet in the title game. That should be a good matchup.

Hopefully TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State also go undefeated in order to help force a playoff system to be put in.
