Stuck on Boss in area 10

Its the Scarab looking boss in Area 10. Once you shoot the bit on his back which makes him drop his shield, red triangles appear on the floor and he shoots bombs into them and I cant work out how you actually kill him. As I said, I'm able to destroy his shield but I can't figure out how to finish him off. In a very short while, the shields reappear.

I finally got past that boss. Once you eliminate his shield, you have about 5 seconds to finish him off and there is a life bar for him at that point. If it takes you too long, the shield will regenerate and you have to knock that shield out again.
