Where is the data saved

I'm just wondering if all the personnal data is saved on the hard drive, or if there is some sort of ranking system online. Does anybody know?

I imagine the time spent in the arcade is on the hard disk (I think I read the post of someone who lost the time already spent), but what about the player's level/medals?

More specifically, if I change consoles, will I have to redo all the medals I've already won?

P.S: I don't want to jinx it - the xbox is working fine for now...

More specifically, can someone confirm I'll be able to pick up where I left on another x360console if I save my profile data on a memory card - I know I won't have access to the games I'm playing now 'cause I downloaded them with the points on my cousin's account (he doesn't use the live anymore) - the only thing I want if to keep track of the medals and time spent in my arcade
