Introduction:

Devil May Cry is an action game developed and published by Capcom, released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2. Although it is the first game in the series of the same name, the events in Devil May Cry are second in the series storyline's chronological order, taking place after Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and before Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 4. Set in modern times on the fictional Mallet Island, the story centers on the characters Dante and Trish and their quest to confront the demon lord Mundus. The story is told primarily through a mixture of cutscenes, which use the game's engine and several pre-rendered full motion videos. Devil May Cry received prominent coverage in the video game media, high overall scores from professional reviewers, and has sold more than two million copies.

What You Will Need:

Blue Orb Guide Here and Here

Enemy Files Guide Here

S-Rank Videos Here

Walkthrough:

You will need to play through the game a minimum of three times, however, If you're not confident in your abilities, after dying 3 consectuive times. the game will ask to put you on 'Easy Automatic Mode'. In this mode, the enemies are weaker, do less damage and your combos will automatically variate without knowing the actual imputs for them.

If you are having trouble with Normal, Easy Automatic is a good place to start, however you will need an extra playthrough as Easy Automatic does NOT count towards your Warming Up! Achievement.

First Playthrough:

This is your Normal Mode Playthrough and is probably the best time for you to collect the majority of your achievements. More importantly, you should be using Normal playthrough to be preparing for your Hard and Dante Must Die playthroughs, as everything from your health, Devil Guage and Skill Purchases carries over to the next difficulty.

Put simply, the more work you put in on your Normal run, the easier the harder difficulties will be.

I also advise not collecting / buying any 'Yellow Orbs' as they will void your 'The Devil Made Me Do It' Achievement.

Achievements Unlocked:

  • Arachnophobia
  • You're No Angel
  • Squashed Like A Bug
  • Bird of Prey
  • Broken Hero
  • Cold Turkey
  • Plucked
  • Night Terrors
  • Fallen Angel
  • Good Night
  • The Nightmare is Over
  • The Devil Went Down To...
  • Thunderstruck
  • Hot As Hell
  • Table of Contents
  • Warming Up!
  • Can You Keep A Secret?
  • Seeing Red
  • Gun Collector
  • Blue Demon
  • Blood Flows Red
  • Bookworm
  • Smashing Sensation
  • The Secret Six
  • The Devil Made Me Do It (See 'Fourth Playthrough' if you're having trouble with this)
  • Untouchable
  • The Secret's Out
  • The Devil's In The Details
  • I Read You Like A Book
  • Blue Devil
  • Redemption

Second Playthrough:

Your second playthrough, you should be powerful enough to muscle through it by this point. Enemies are a little more agressive and do more damage. Just make sure you are more aware of enemy attacks and abuse your Devil Trigger.

Achievements Unlocked:

  • Boiling!
  • I Read You Like A Book (If you missed it the first time, you should get it here)

Third Playthrough:

Your 'Dante Must Die' run. Here shit gets real. Enemies are agressive, have more health and do more damage. Whats worse, they can also enter Devil Trigger.

While in Devil Trigger, enemies do not suffer from hit-stun and which means they can interrupt combos. Try hit and run tactics and be liberal with healing items and abuse DT. Try not to worry too much about stringing combos and dodge a lot.

If you put the work in on your normal run, this shouldnt be as hard as it can be.

Achievements Unlocked:

  • Combustible!!!

Cleanup / Fourth Playthrough:

Although by this time, providing you spent the time on your first run getting your health and devil gauge maxed, you shouldnt have much left to do. This is the run where you can concentrate properly on your 'The Devil Made Me Do It' achievement, or anything else you have left.

BOSSES

CREDIT TO KHEAPATHIC's GUIDE FROM PS3TROPHIES

Phantom

You fight Phantom twice, officially, in Missions 3 and 8. He'll also chase you in other missions but you can simply run from him. Air Raid is more than enough to handle Phantom in both fights. If you're going for rank though you'll want to use Ifrit to combat him on DMD difficulty.

[spoiler=Phantom]

Claw Swipe

If you're in front of him and get close he'll swing his two front claws at you.

Lava Burst

He'll charge up a projectile in his mouth before shooting it, take cover or properly time your dodge.

Lava Spout

He'll stick his head into the ground and pools of lava will appear at your feet. Simply keep moving to avoid these.

Lava Rain

Phantom only does this in Mission 8. He'll fire off projectiles from his back and they'll rain down towards you. Just like the Lava Spout, keep moving to avoid these.

Neo Angelo

You fight Nelo Angelo 3 times in the game and he is one of the strongest bosses in the game. His attacks hurt a lot, however they are also quite easy to dodge. The best method of combat is to fight him on the ground, dodge his attacks and then counter-attack while he's still recovering.

[spoiler=Neo Angelo]

Horizontal Slash

Angelo will hold his sword to his back and horizontal to the ground before swinging it. Jump or roll to dodge it.

Vertical Combo

Angelo will hold his sword vertical to the ground and admire it before slashing forward, following up with two more slashes, and depending on when you fight him another downward swing. He homes in on how you dodge, so just stay away while he swings his sword.

Stinger

Angelo will rush you and deliver a thrust just like Dante's Stinger. Jump or roll to dodge it.

Energy Blast

Angelo focuses blue energy into a hand before firing it towards you. Jump or roll with the proper timing to dodge this attack.

Singing Swords

Angelo only uses this on Mission 17. This attack has many forms, multiple blue swords will appear and will be used offensively or defensively. Defensively, Angelo will have the swords rotate around him; you cannot attack him with a melee attack during this time, use the Grenadegun to get rid of them and dodge his attacks. Offensively they will either stay near Angelo before he fires them towards Dante or they will rotate around Dante in different patterns before going in for the kill. Depending on the pattern they can either fire in rapid succession or all at once. Dodging these require excellent timing on your part.

Griffon

Griffon is the weakest of the bosses and can be dealt with via your guns; I prefer using Ebony/Ivory and the Grenadegun. When standing on the ground he is too tall to attack effectively. It is possible to shoot his chest enough and put him on the ground and stun him, but it shouldn't be relied upon.

[spoiler=Griffon]

Headbutt

When Griffon is on the ground he may charge you and will try to headbutt you twice. Jumping or rolling is enough to dodge this. He will always swing twice at you, so be sure you won't get hit by his second attack.

V-Laser

In the air or on ground, Griffon will make an electric orb and it'll shoot two lasers outward in a V shape. The lasers will quickly close in where Dante currently is. If it locks onto you while you're in the air, simply don't be there; if you're on the ground jump while it closes in.

Horizontal Laser

In the air or on ground, Griffon will shoot horizontal laser beams at you. Simply jump, duck or go around them.

Carpet Bomb

He only does this on Mission 9. Griffon will fly into the sky and simply glide forward while dropping many electric orbs. Don't stand under him.

Laser Phoenix Board

He only does this on Mission 12. Griffon will send an electrical bird looking thing at you and it will ground itself to Dante. You need to shoot it to have it dissapear. While grounded it will make continuous passes at you and will either damage or, or throw you up into the air.

Vertical Laser

He only does this on Mission 15. Griffon will make a wall of vertical lasers and send them your way. You'll need to stand between them as they go past you.

Nightmare

It has two forms and a multitude of attacks that can annoy you. The first thing to know is it has two forms and can only be hurt when his weak spot is shown. It starts out in puddle form and you'll need to hit one of the switches in the area enough to get it to take form. When it takes form it will alternate attacks with showing its weak spot.

[spoiler=Nightmare]

Ice Leeches

These things will follow Dante around, latch onto him and fall to the ground in an icicle explosion to hurt him. You can let them crawl on you, but you'll need to jump or roll to avoid the attack.

These things are always around.

Defensive Lasers

When you first get Nightmare to take form, 4 white orbs on it will fire lasers at you for a few seconds before showing its weakspot. Simply run around to dodge them.

Spear

After your first attack phase on its weakspot it will start shooting a spear from outside of its body when it takes form. You can either stay far away or jump/roll with the proper timing to avoid this attack. It will always use its spear 3 times in a row.

Homing Slime

This attack will have Nightmare shooting black slime projectiles that slightly home in on you when its weakspot it showing. You can destroy them with attacks like Inferno or dodge them with a well timed roll.

Welcome to the Nightmare

If you stand on or very close to Nightmare in its puddle form, it will swallow Dante whole and bring him into an alternate area. You'll have to kill several Sargassos before fighting a boss. The first time you fight Nightmare, the boss is Phantom; Griffon is the second boss and Nelo Angelo is the third boss. Once you've defeated the boss, you can leave by entering the beam of light. Doing this will cause damage to Nightmare, however you can only do this once.

Helicopter Blade

Nightmare does not use this on the first fight. His topside will open up and he'll throw a wide blade out that will hover around the area like a helicopter. Don't jump into its path and don't mount Nightmare when it's close to avoid it.

Net

Nightmare only uses this on the last fight. When Nightmare is in puddle form it may jump to the roof of the area; whatever you do DO NOT GET UNDER IT! If you do it will trap you and you will only have a few seconds to free yourself. Instead stay on the outside of the area and dodge the projectiles it shoots your way. After 10 projectiles it will come back down to the ground.

NOT OVER YET!!!

This is Nightmare's final attack. On the third fight and you've depleted its health bar it will catch a second wind and the weakspot will be on its topside. BE CAREFUL! The weakspot shoots out a thick beam of white light that hurts and will knock you back. You will have to dodge this attack to put Nightmare down for good.

Mundus Part.1

Mundus will start far away from you and you'll gradually get closer. He'll have a shield up with 4 orbs floating around, you'll need to shoot these 4 orbs to drop his shield. Dont forget that by holding http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/a.png, you will move faster and DONT FORGET YOUR DEVIL TRIGGER.

[spoiler=Mundus]

Lightning Bolts

Just like Griffon's Vertical Lightning, go between the lightning to not get hit.

Hyper Beam

Mundus will charge up and release a large beam towards you. He will always aim it in relation to where you are when he's almost done charging; he will also swing it either vertically or horizontally depending on where you are.

Rock Throws

Mundus will throw giant rocks at you. Hold http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/a.png and dodge.

Mundus Part.2

This fight is much harder. Dont ignore the giant orbs as they will replenish your Devil Trigger which you will need to even attack Mundus.

Also, dont forget that killing the Lava Serpents will yeild precious green orb's.

[spoiler=mundus2]

Orb Beam Shower

Mundus will make small white orbs and they'll spin around and blanket the area. Jump or roll to dodge.

Giant Orbs

Mundus will make 4 giant orbs at once; you need to destroy 2-3 of these when he makes them. After they linger he'll draw them in and use them for an attack. The more he has the better chance he has to hit you. However if you destroy all 4 he'll immediately make a new set; so destroy a few.

Red Beam Shower

Mundus will shoot red beams out of his back and they'll rain down. Run in one direction to dodge these.

Meteor Shower

Mundus will shoot meteors out of the lava and like the Red Beams, just run one direction to dodge.

Platform Smash

Every now and then Mundus will smash the platform that circle him and this will throw the rocks towards Dante. Jump or roll to avoid them.

Fist Smash

Just like the platform smash but Mundus will slam his fist down where Dante is standing, roll to avoid.

Lava Spout

Just like the Phanrom ability, Mundus will put his hand into the lava and lava will spout up where Dante's standing. Keep moving to avoid.

Lava Dragon

Mundus will summon a dragon that will attack Dante. Kill it.

DMC1:Finish the game on Hard Mode

Providing you have maxed your health, devil gauge, and purchased all skills on your first run, this should be even easier than normal. Just remember not to get too cocky as enemies are far more agressive and do more damage. Also Devil Trigger is there to be used so abuse it.

DMC1:Finish the game on Dante Must Die Mode

Enemies here are agressive as hell, do lots of damage, and have more health. Whats worse, is enemies themselves can also use Devil Trigger. While they do, they do not suffer from hit-stun which means they can interrupt combos. This is the thing that will take the most getting used to.

You need to completley change the way you approach the game and try to be less agressive and more of a thinker. It will be slow and you will die a lot, but patience and perserverance will get you through. The fact that you should by now have maxed everything should make this significatly easier. Good Luck!

DMC1:Unlock all the entries for every enemy file in the status menu

You should get 'Table Of Contents' and 'Bookworm' in your first playthrough without even trying.

When it comes to 'I Read You Like A Book', you basically need to document every enemies moves. In some cases you will need to die and in others you will need to use a certain move on the enemies. Going for this achievement will stop you from getting your 'The Devil Made Me Do It' achievement, so its not advised to go for it on your normal difficulty run.

Help is at hand though as there is a helpful counter in the Enemy File's that tells you how many of the moves of each enemy you have documented.

DMC1:Complete all Secret Missions

You will need to complete all Secret Missions. I advise doing all these on your first playthrough for 2 reasons.

  • You will get Blue Orb fragements for completing a mission
  • On harder difficulties some of the Secret Missions will be almost impossible.

Some of the missions are exceptionally hard and some will require you to do the mission on your first try otherwise the mission will dissapear. When this happens, you will need to press :back: and select 'Reset' then reload your last save.

The locations of the Secret Missions are at follows:

  • Secret Mission #1: Critical Hit - Mission 3: Right After you beat Phantom, you need to run back to the bridge that breaks and jump in the water.
  • Secret Mission #2: Phantom Baby - Mission 4: At the very start of the mission, run back through the door to where you fought Phantom.
  • Secret Mission #3: Phantom Baby II - Mission 4: When Phantom chases you through the corridoor, its through the door at the very end.
  • Secret Mission # 4: 3 Beasts - Mission 4: After you have beaten Shadow, run back to the room with the hit-switch and elevator and go down.
  • Secret Mission # 5: One-Eyed Evil - Mission 7: Run to the room where you found the 'Old Key' during Mission 6.
  • Secret Mission # 6: Wandering Ghosts - Mission 11: Back through the door you ended Mission 10 at.
  • Secret Mission # 7: Water Cell - After Mission 13 and Before Mission 14: Go back to the captains cabin on the Ghost Ship and examine the captains skeleton.
  • Secret Mission # 8: Treasure Of The Reaper - Mission 15: Go back to the elevator by the waterfall you encountered in Mission 14, and examine the portrait of the skeleton.
  • Secret Mission # 9: Stairway Of Tranquility - Mission 16: Exit and Re-Enter the Colosseum.
  • Secret Mission # 10: Shadow of Darkness - Mission 16: After beating Nightmare, run back to the Airplane Room with the hit-switch and elevator.
  • Secret Mission # 11: Blue Gem In The Sky - Mission 17: At the start of the mission, turn around and jump through the broken bridge portrait.
  • Secret Mission # 12: Hidden Bangle - Mission 21: Examine the wall directly opposite the God of Time statue. There is no clear marker to where the mission activates, so just keep mashing :bbut:

DMC1:Collect 50,000 Red Orbs

Although this accumulates throughout your other playthroughs, if you are trying to max everything and buy everything in your first playthrough, you will get it then.

Some good missions to farm orbs are:

  • Mission 4:

After you kill Shadow, while in the courtyard, run up and around the balcony into the room where you knock back the statue to reveal a hatch. Drop down the hatch into the room where the shotgun and judgement key / staff was, then into the long corridoor and back into the courtyard where you started. Keep running this route and you should get 250+ orbs per run killing puppets and witches. This is a good early grinding route.

  • Mission 9:

After you kill Griffon, and use Ifrit to light the torches enter the next area. Proceed untill the door shields and kill the puppets and enter the next area. Keep passing through these two areas for a mixure of lizards and puppets.

  • Mission 16:

In the room with the Airplane, if you just keep entering and exiting where you came, you can fight the blue dopplegangers. If you time it right, you can fight a constant stream of these fellas in a neverending battle.

DMC1: Collect All Guns

Gun Locations as follows:

  • Shotgun: On Mission 2, in the Library where you collect the Staff of Judgement. It is on the balcony opposite where you collected the Rusty Key. You'll need to destroy the table and it will be lying on the floor.
  • Grenade Launcher: On Mission 8, collect this from a corpse near some machinery just after lowering the drawbridge.
  • NeedleGun: On Mission 12, when you enter the ghost ship, head to the deck, and kill the Lizards. It should be near a green door.
  • Nightmare Beta: On Mission 15, there are two rooms to the left and right of the main door where you can use the shield to get the Luminite and the Pair of Lances. It doesnt matter which door you enter first, as regardless, the first door you enter will give you the Lances and Luminite. After you get these items, head to the other shield door to find the Nighmare Beta

In order to do this, you will need to complete every Secret Mission, buy every blue orb from the shop (5 in total) and collect the hidden fragments throughout the game. You will get your 'Blue Demon' Achievement while going for this.

Thanks. I'm getting around to doing the rest. I went away for the weekend so nothing has been done as of yet. It will be completed within the next few days.

Im not 100% sure, Ive checked a couple times, but do you have the Max all Dantes skills listed? I used control F to look for it. You have it listed under the main list you have but I dont think you have one listed with a description (Im sorry if you didnt get around to it; Im not meaning to rush you. Just making sure you didnt forget about one :)). EDIT: ah ok theres a couple not listed so you prob just havent gotten around to it. No big deal

I now theres millions of videos out there already, but if youd like a specific one, or one redone for your guide, Id be more than happy to get it done for you. Im only on the fourth mission so I still have plenty to do.

Its listed there under the Blue Devil achievement. I'm going to add videos when I get around to it. However, you're more than welcome to contribute if you want.

You can also get Nightmare-Beta in Mission 19. It'll be on the bed in the inverted world.

Your requirements list for S-ranking only holds on Normal and Hard, as some times on DMD! are longer (e.g.: 8 minutes for Mundus instead of 5).

Also, for the interested: it's imperative that if you follow that list, that you do not use any items as these will immediately lower your ranking to A or lower, due to the way the ranking system works. There's a third criterion, and that's damage taken. No damage taken is worth just as many ranking points as meeting the time or orb requirement and can compensate for using an item (though, if you needed to use an item, you'd probably not lose any health anyway. :p).

And last thing: if I remember correctly, you actually start out with Yellow Orbs, but I'm not sure on that. And you can only get 320G in this game. ;p

No you dont start with any yellow. I just got all the dmc1 achievements today (minus dante must die which ill finish tomorrow) using the guide. Some of the enemy files in the description where wrong, so I had to get some of them on hard mode which was a complete bitch

Ah, I was probably mistaken with the free Yellow Orb you get outside mission 1.
