I would like to add that in order to get to the barren temple during your second play through you should talk to a guard just outside the kings mansion to get a compass that will allow you to walk through the sandstorm to the barren temple out in the desert.

This seems to be working as I am doing this now, although my drops of complex machines seem to be far less than the other 2.

Edit: I got up to 99 simple machines, and I had 81 complex and 81 elaborate machines at the time so the drop ratio is pretty even.
