Have you guys heard that the 360 will soon be able to upscale in 1080p?

LINKY! (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/20/tgs-xbox-360-to-add-1080p-support-ps3-to-lose-bullet-point/)

Is this the final nail in ps3's George Foreman grill shaped coffin?

Does this make the HD-DVD drive pointless? I mean is a HD-DVD all that much better than an upscaled regular DVD??

Discussion please! :D

You can see the difference between an uprated normal dvd and an HD-DVD quite easily.

But the 360 doesnt have a 'proper' HD output device, so not technically accurate at the mo

Is it even possible to run 1080P Without HDMI???

I mean the IDEA sounds good. But I think there may be a few issues as far as hardware is concerned..(Maybe they'll get it all worked out, But its still gonna be hard to match the Ps3)

The Ps3 is gonna have all this stuff BUILT IN. Where all 360 gamers are just gonna have to have a SHIT load of add-ons that take up more space just to make our system somewhat as good as the Ps3.

I read that story over at IGN today. It sounds like it will be good, but it mentioned that it will be the developers responsibility to make games in 1080p. It seems like the games that are out now won't be affected by this update. I'm not an expert, but I think that the HDMI output may be required to get full 1080p also. I'm not sure what else the HDMI cable would be used for if it wasn't for top quality resolution. Maybe MS has something up its sleeve with an HDMI output on their HD-DVD player? I agree however that it would have been nicer to have these features included insted of having a ton of expensive add-ons.

I have a 720p/1080i HDTV. If I were to buy the 1080p add on, would the game look better, even though my HDTV doesn't support it ?

Nope, sorry Riddling. Your TV's max output resolution is 1080i. 1080p on your TV = no go. Just get a nice 30 inch widescreen LCD monitor :woop:.

So there's really no point in buying the add on with my HDTV since the picture would look exactly the same :p Ya I'll have to get a nice monitor like yours :)

I play my 360 on a Samsung SyncMaster 940MW. It's a 19" widescreen LCD monitor that is also an HDTV (it's pretty cool to be able to hit a button and switch from computer to TV to 360 all on the same screen, with PIP) and has a maximum resolution of 1440x900. What is 1080p defined as, as far as pixels go? Can my screen display 1080p?

1080p is 1920x1080. This is exciting news. So all games will be in 1080p. Meaning developers just have to make sure their game runs in 720p/1080i and the console will do the rest. This is cool as all get out. Gears of War in 1080p!

Great news about the software upgrade finally allowing the 360 to upscale DVDs. Can't believe it didn't ship with that functionality, to be honest!!!

My TV doesn't display in 1080p :(, but I'm not worried. Some 360 games don't even display in 1080i, yet I still enjoy them. :drunk

I'm certainly not the expert in this area, but my understanding is that 720p looks better than 1080i. The progressive component makes the picture a lot smoother on the edges since the whole screen is refreshed at one time. Just throwing it out there... you may want to try 720p and see how it looks. 1080p of course is going to be the best of both worlds when it comes out though.

Cheers. I have tried games in 720p, but prefer 1080i. Either way the games look sweet though :).

Someone told me they're trialling 'Higher definition TV' in Japan at the mo. Anyone know what resolution that is? (Its definately higher than 1080p)

- Eternal Sonata (Trusty Bell)
- Lost Planet: Extreme Condition

My favorites.
