Inventory Stuff

Might seem like a stupid question, but please don't point and laugh as I get upset :)

How the hell do you use stuff in your inventory, like the medikit and suchlike? The ingame thing says to use them, so I highlight them and press X and nothing happens.

Any help would be appreciated - any pointing and laughing will be rewarded with tears
