View Full Version : The real mans sport

Given a recent thread in the members profile forum I thought we should debate the real mans sport;

Rugby or American Football

Now being English I have to vote Rugby, not only did we invent the sport but its basically the same game without any padding so you have to be a real man to play. However I am open to a debate and think it could be interesting to get peoples views, and see if it really is a UK/US divide.

Im with rugby as the mans sport no need for a rest every 10 seconds and having to go off the field at every available oportunity.

How ever I fear that both of these games can be beaten for player toughness by aussie rules.

Thats like asking where are you from...theres no point to this because Americans will say Football and British will say Rugby. IMO nether. Soccer is the better sport.

Not True... I'm going to vote Rugby eventhough I'm from thsi part of the world..... But I think I could think of a "Manlier" sport than both of those....

Soccer (Or football as it is called) is a pansys sport. Did you see any of the world cup. Players diving on the ground if another player comes near them. More like syncronised diving than anything else.

I guess you can say that, since most teams (in the world cup) were truely cheap but I asure you that uf you were to sit down and watch a match within the Spanish or British league, you would truely see the sport how its suposed to be seen, that or im just a fan boy. ;)

Im British, follow the might Argyle, and see aprox 10 games a season.

I enjoy watching it- doesnt make it manly tho!!

I dont really have an opinion as to which is "manlier" but imo american football is a much better game to watch/play than rugby. I had the same view as most brits at first (they wear padding so they must be gay, the game stops and starts every 5 seconds.) This was until i took time to actually learn the rules, and watch a couple of games and its a really tactical game and can be really tense in a close finish.

Paintballing is manlier than both.... Getting hit by rock sized balls, traveling at 350 feet per second....while shooting others, If you watch some on TV you will see what I'm talking about....

Soccer the real man's sport? Get real, they dive so much it could BE diving, and as soon as someone tackles them, their ankle/leg/arm/head/back/anywhere else on their body is suddenly injured. And then about 2 min after the traner comes over and LOOKS at it, their 'injury' is magically better! And i have to agree, aussie rules footfall is the REAL mans sport, although rugby is probably a lot tougher than aussie rules.

Don't mix up South American football for football in the nation where it was created, i.e. ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't get none of that diving shit, unless it's from those punks like Ronaldo and Diouf!!!! The Premiership and all the divisions below are where the real football is played. The World Cup takes place every 4 years, the real football kick off in August, in England!!! And thats a fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They're both manly sports. But you can't come out and say football isn't manly because they wear pads. Trust me, there are plenty of injuries to prove that. Here's a good clip of some big hits in football: http://youtube.com/watch?v=OMU5tWJSzwM

Didn't mention Spain because of all the South Americans there :p

But, on the whole, it doesn't go down like that shit that happened in the World Cup! Damn that disgraceful shit! Damn Portuguese are a right bunch of diving dicks!!!

Yeah they take some hard hits, but they still wear body armour!

Minty
08-28-2006, 10:53 AM
For every hard hit in American Football, there is one equally hard in rugby. The difference is they dont double up their size with padding- they stop the force 100% with their bodies.

And when you got some scary ass dude like Jonah Lumu running at you full pelt, thats when you have to be a man. Or 7 men as it was on occasions.

Not saying American Footballers arent manly. Hell, theres probably some mmanly ballerinas out there as well :p

Having not seen a lot lot of rugby I can't say too much as to which is definitely the more 'manly' sport but I will say that the fact that they wear pads in American football is often negated by the fact that the guy tackling them at a fast clip is 350-400lbs. Like I said, I'm not very familiar with rugby but I would imagine most of their players are not that big.

Also after 2 videos of football hits, how about one of our neighbo(u)rs across the pond producing a video of rugby hits.

Minty
08-28-2006, 02:15 PM
Id say that most professional rugby players- the big boys anyway, are on average 6 foot 5 and 20 stone - s0 thats about 300 lb. But i bet they can run faster than an a 400lb guy.

As for videos:

Tackles:

Haka:

Those videos were crazy, the Haka one reminds me of the Orcs getting ready to battle in LOTR, haha. Very intimidating. While my vote would go to Rugby because of the lack of pads, I still think football can be pretty rough.

Good finds Minty, so much for ours being softer, those guys are just as big, just as heavy and tackle just as hard, but oh wait... no armour...

Psycence
08-28-2006, 04:10 PM
And thats the reason that no american can win this arguement, because they have to wear armour at the end of the day

invincible rob
08-28-2006, 04:24 PM
:whs why do they wear armour, to prevent injuries that happen anyway?

Be honest people if you saw a weedy guy in armour, or a massive guy without, who would you run from?

Why the FUCK do we have to have another thread of America vs. the U.K.?
And don't tell me it's not, because essentially that's all this is. Fuck it, we both have our sports that we enjoy, and there's no reason to say which is better. I'm so sick and tired of people squabbling over who's country is better. We need to stop this bullshit and remember that we're a community. Fuck!!

I understand the feeling Legion. Just remember this. No matter how much fun they make fun of our sports, our politicians, our eating habits, or any combination there of, our populace is armed to the motherfucking teeth and we could invade them any time we wanted. Fuck the US government, I'm talking private citizens here. We've got more guns than they have people.

WHAT NOW ENGLAND?!

Hmmmm, how has this turned in to an America vs. England thread, Legion thats going a bit too far (*ahem* Look at Webb's post and you know where he's from ;):p)

I think the point being made was that most Americans would back up American Football because thats what they grew up withm, vice versa with the English and rugby....

At the end of the day, does it really fucking matter? People get nailed in both sports all the time.

And on that note, to stop this from turning in to war, like Legion put it :p I'll lock this son of a bitch down ;)

This was actually a good thread as an insight- there some good vids of AF that i hadnt seen, and likewise for some of the Yanks with the rugby im sure.

This wasnt a UK versus US thread, and then it got treated as one.

And as for you guys being able to invade us, go for it. We are the undisputed champions of war. DO you guys really want ANOTHER depressing war film?
