Do optional missions count towards any achievements?

what optional missions? you mean the fight clubs or added objectives? if you mean objectives then yes you have to do them all/ get perfect on every investigation and destroy all emiters, find all radios/tvs to get a gold rating. If you mean the fight clubs then no although you can use the practice arena to get the flambre, goaaal, chain attacks and a few other ones just set it to spawn in exotic weapons

I think that he means do you have to do the in mission optional items to get the gold ranking on the mission. i.e. do you have to photo the door of the news van on mission 10, can you kill a security guard and still get a gold ranking? Anyone know the answer to this one? I would also like to know as I cant seem to get the security gaurds to knock out without killing at least one everytime. so annoying........

yes you need to do the optional objectives, else you wont get gold.

the guards is easy if you have gold on the lvl before it, as you ll get super silent boots, just press left stick and move slowly , you will not hear yourself walk meaning the guards can t hear you.
also, lose weapons, so you have to punch guards, i also killed them too easy until i just started fisticufss with them,
and the LB+RB to put them to sleep, be careful not to double click or you ll snap a nexk or 2
