Some people have said that this game is really easy on assassin. I didn't think it was all that hard but I still died a lot. Here are some tips that might make your play through on assassin a little easier.
Put up your dukes
The key to fighting in this game is to counter attack (until you get to the professor at least). Block the attackers combo then unleash your own. Only strike if you are within arms length. If you miss your first punch you're going to get pummeled. This is key during boss fights because they can lead with a kick, and usually do, and you can't. The safest strategy for bosses is to block until the button counter appears. If you succeed they will be stunned, allowing you to get close enough to pull off a few combos. The other benefit of this approach is that you can't die from an enemy takedown. Yes you read that right. You can have zero health, fail the button counter move and not die. Holding block is your friend.
Boss tips
For Castel: save the famous pen takedown until after he pulls out the knife. He'll lose it for the rest of the fight this way.
For the professor: everyone has said this a hundred times but for good reason. A very quick and effective combo is X-Y-X. You don't have time to stand around and block his attacks so lay into him hard. Get close, X-Y-X, repeat.
Short controlled bursts
Obviously the key to shooting in this game is to take cover. As soon as you see good cover (cover that doesn't break apart) use it. Face the enemy while he is firing at you so when you pop out of cover the reticule will auto aim. They all shoot in bursts so time your attack and only fire off a couple of shots before you go back into cover. Hiding in cover will replenish your health.
That's freakin' cheap
There are a few things in this game that will really piss you off. One is the camera. There will be several times when fist fighting that the camera won't switch to a good angle after a cinematic move. This is why block is your friend. If you can't see just block and move the camera with the analog stick. There will be other times when someone will shoot at you while you're fighting, sometimes from inches away! You can try to keep your fighting enemy between you and the gunner and other times you can draw the fighter around a corner and away from the fire. There will also be times when you can't do anything but get shot in the head and die.
