I have 3 other friends who have got the RROD.
One of them got it the week he got it back from M$.
I am starting to get a little paranoid about it and I was wanting to know is there anyway to prevent or slowdown the chances of getting the RROD?
Thanks.

Well, here are some basic things that i do:
* Make sure your 360 is lying down flat, not upright.
* Make sure your 360 is in a relatively open space.
Erm... i can't actually remember what else lol. As i mentioned on another thread, some people thing that the RROD is caused by a wire sliding out of place because the solder melts or something like that, so try to avoid overheating.
Weirdly, some my friends over heat their Xbox to cure RROD. It seems to work.

i belive the overheat trick you are talking about is called the towel trick
u rap the towel around the 360 and turn it on and it is ment to fix the rrod
if you go 2 youtube there is lots of vids
also you can buy a external fan for the back of the xbox and that does prevent overheating

The only advice I can give really is don't keep the 360 in an enclosed space, in other words dont block the air vents up, and also don't leave the system on for prolonged periods of time. If you switch the console off every 1 or 2 hours and leave it for 15 minutes, that should give it enough chance to cool down.

I lie it down flat and rest it on two small aluminium bars (about 10cm clearence) so the air can circulate underneth the console as well. As the underside always seemed to be the hottest on my console, it works and helps keep it cooler.

Always place it in a flat position and not upright.
Keep it in an open space, make sure the hot air coming out the back isn't getting blocked and re-entering the system.
Don't leave it on for long periods, an example would be don't go for the 50 hour achievement in Timeshift or Viva Pinata in one go.
These are some things i feel might cause the RROD, but it's just my opinion.
Don't play original Xbox games, from a game disc or downloaded from Marketplace.
Try to turn your system off from the controller not by pushing the button on the console.

Some interesting information there, never heard about avoiding original Xbox games or turning off by the controller.
There's really no sure proof way obviously but the only real advice is to keep it well ventilated. It may be something that you may hear over and over but it really is the best way to try and avoid the RRoD.

Yea, there just things that i think would have an influence in the RROD occuring.
I do all of those, and i haven't had a RROD ever, and i've had my 360 for 17 months.

So I guess keeping it flat, set it on something that lets air flow under the xbox, turn it off with my controller, stay away from the originals, and let it rest every 2 hours can help/prevent getting the red rings.
Thanks.
I have herd that the towel trick voids your warranty with Microsoft and it can do more damage to the xbox itself.

Umm....Don't by a 360 is the only 100% guaranteed way.

I'd say don't leave your 360 flat as I've had mine upright for almost 2 years without any problems. The thing is, and I'm sure everyone will agree with this, just keep it well ventilated (ie. make sure it gets constant airspace around it and not stuffed in some nook n' cranny that'll get hot). Anything else is pure speculation.

Unless MS can now read minds, there's no possible way for them to know that you've wrapped your console in a hug, let alone a towel. I wouldn't worry about it but personally, I wouldn't even bother. Once the damage is done, just send it it for repair if it's the RRoD.

Keep console horizontal (flat)
By keeping the console in a horizontal position and on a stable surface, it helps keep the system stable which also prevents disc scratching.
Keep on a hard surface
Wood and Glass work well. Do not set the console on carpeting or any sort of material. By placing it on carpeting, it prevents the console from cooling down
Intercooler systems are bad!
Instead of taking hot air out of the console, it pushes cold air in. The bad thing about this, is it blows the coldish air into where the console is trying to blow hot air out, therefore, overheating it.
Turn off the console after extended play
For example, at 2 hour intervals, turn off the system for 15-20 minutes. That time is quite enough to let the console vent a little bit.
If possible, elevate the system
Put a few blocks under each end of the console to allow it to vent easier. Another good thing, is do not stack any games or ANYTHING on any side of the console. Make sure it is out in the open, not in an entertainment center.

nothing will prevent you getting rrod, if your system is bound for it. Just play your games and have fun and don't worry about it. If you get rrod, you are covered.

Thanks, sounds simple enough.
I am doing all this except for the blocks under eachside
Which I am fixing to do.

You cant exactly prevent it some things can help but its a system failure so small things like the console being flat does not really prevent it taking breaks from playing will probably help - just do not let your console overheat, I suppose

Also, don't plug your 360 into a surge protector. The 360's power block acts as one, so by plugging it in, it messes with your console. While there are some that haven't encountered a problem, it's better to not even risk it.
I plugged my first 360 into a surge protector, and it got RRoD after 3 monthes.

Um, don't buy that Nyko cooler thing, it makes it worse, make sure you leave space around it, and pray to whoever you worship.

I thought laying it down would overheat it, as the fans would be pushing against itself.
Mine was facing down for 2 weeks and i got 2 red lights.

There's loads of arguments about which is best. Nothing is proven, but I'm sure most people believe horizontal to be the best.
I have mine horizontal, but that's mainly due to not wanting it to screw up my discs with radial marks. (Another thing that's not proven, but I'd rather not take the risk)! :)

I've kept mine on for 5-6 hours at a time when I just generally play games straight.
My advice would be not to play it if you seriously dont want it to brick lol, the RROD has got everyone really paranoid and if you have to play your games in fear of your console bricking then something is seriously wrong lol.

Sorry for ignorance, but does bricking = freezing ? :S

1. Keep it flat (horizontal...)
2. Nice, open area.
3. Don't play too much on hot days (higher chance of overheating)
4. Get some coolers :)

8-9 hours was the longest i had it on once. If i decide i want to play all d ay or most of the day i try to plan it around my lunch and dinner, so it can rest during those periods. It's fital to not over work your 360 IMO

im on my 2nd xbox now, first one lasted a respectable 18months. i sent it off to microsoft for 'Repair' . the reson i used inverted commas, is because i mark any products i send back with magic marker. so when i recieve them again i know if its mine or if its a replacement. the slip that came back with my xbox said they had replaced the dvd drive. got my black light out and wholla. no magic marker... they had indeed sent a new console. microsoft say RROD isnt related to over heating. at least the 3 red lights. although, my new console stays a LOT cooler than the last one. so my advice is just keep it vetilated. and by that i dont mean leave it on its own on your worktop or cabinet. but make sure there is a way for the hot air coming out of the back to escape! at least 15-30cm clearance from the back panel is needed. also, dont buy aftermarket fans. they really dont work. as most blow air into the xbox. over the exhaust fans.... thus completely canceling out the airflow all together. the ones that do exhaust air drain too much power and cause the console to become unstable. theres a reason the xbox has that powersupply. cause its only meant to power the xbox! peace out.

would A/C help or is that a dumb ass suggestion?
These are the ways I know that can prevent it
1. Pray to God
2. Pray to Satin
3. Don't turn it on

No point in doing 1 and 2 if you're already doing the third.
And shouldn't 1 and 2 cancel eachother out ? :)

My only tip - never use the intercooler.
I keep my xbox upright and I usually place it on carpet and I've never had any trouble with it. :\

It's a choice you can pick one if you want to play you'd have to go with 1 or 2

I guess i should not play my 360 for a while then since its hitting some where near 50 degrees where i live.
I always thought having your 360 flat would cause it to overheat. I guess i should put my 360 flat again then if it is better then keeping it up right.
