View Full Version : Skateboarding... A crime?

Well, for years, I've thought it's bullshit, but it's never affected me or my friends until today. My best friend just got a ticket for $25 and if he gets reported again, he gets arrested.
Can anyone see any common sense behind making skateboarding such a taboo thing or whatever? I see no harm in kickflipping down three stairs.

people over react to skating. i dunno why most people think there is harm being done. ive not had many problems but ive seen so many vids on you tube of people going crazy about it.
Well were was he skating? If he was skating in a no skate zone, then yes it is a crime.

Skateboarding is not a CRIME unless you suck at it! LOL
But anyway, when i used to to skate with my friends we would always get in trouble for doing nothing. The sercuity guards kept hassling us and even confiscated our skateboards!!!
The reason they think its so bad is because they dont want they property damaged or they are jealous (because you so much cooler then them LOL) or something like that.

Society in general has always disowned skateboarding. I personally don't mind people skateboarding as long as they don't affect those who aren't skateboarding. It's their right and unless there weaving through traffic in times square i don't see an issue with it.
Hope your friend doesn't get arrested though, cop could have been on his period too! :p

Sucks man. We have a park here for skateboarding. I skate there from time to time, I'm not great at it and fall every now and then, but I can land some tricks. But at least me and my friends have a place to skate.

It's not so much the act of skating, as it is the stereotype of skaters. I hate using stereotypes, but most of society views skaters as rebels who have no regard for the law or the public. Even if kids are skating and obeying the law, some people will just automatically complain and try to stop it because of what they think skaters represent.

You make a valid point and i agree 100%.
But as long as their not causing any harm to society they should be able to enjoy life and skate with out people always complaining and breathing down their necks.
Grinding in front of a hotel is one thing, but in a park where it's not causing any harm is another.

Ever see the video Tussell of the Security guard decking the kid skating?
They BOTH got arrested.
But it's not a problem in the U.K at all.
In Ireland a bunch of skate up the streets etc and noone ever does a thing, but then again this is America Russ, you have seen some of these people over reacting to skating.

Most people are correct in this assumption. All 14 year olds piss me off but the ones who skateboard (which means they carry their boards around and can't land a kickflip) act like fucking morons and think property damage is hilarious. I agree that it's not fair to stereotype all skaters and maybe they should make some more skate parks so skaters have a place to go

I used to skate and whenever we would find new spots there would be guard rails there the next day preventing us from doing anything. People make way too big of a deal when they see it. The only thing I can think of is that they think it's defacing piublic property?
And BTW, I was a good skateboarder and an even better snowboarder, but I stopped since the risk isn't worth the reward, in skating anyway. I still snowboard. :D
This is an extremely sensitive topic with a lot of my friends. Personally, I'm not a skater but I hung out with quite a few in high school & college. I've seen both sides of the spectrum as far as "skater stereotypes" go. Most of my friends fall into the opposite of what you always hear about -- they mainly stick to skate parks or abandoned areas to do their skating. They understand that even if they're not doing drugs or generally causing a public nuisance, there's still the possibility of damaging public or private property while grinding, jumping, etc. Cops cracked down pretty hard in Philly around "Love Park" and near Drexel & Penn's campus, so much so that we had to get pretty creative in our hangouts.
I guess the bottom line is, as long as you're not in an area that explicitly states with a sign "No Skateboarding" and you're not damaging someone else's property...have at it. :rock

You say you always got in trouble for doing nothing, but you admit you're on someone else's property. Now I've seen places that have been used a lot by boarders and there's big grazes along rails/concrete/whatever, so you can't say it doesn't wreck stuff. So essentially, the guard was well within his right to stop you.
It's kind of like if someone came into your front garden with a sledgehammer and started smashing your front wall down. Would you think that was ok?
So yeah, if it's on someone else's property, then I say fair enough for moving boarders along.

It is public property and it's pretty much to going rule that skating in public is an iffy thing. Someplaces are okay and others are not. You can't get miffed about not being alowed to use that spot. It's kind of weird that they just straight wrote a ticket though. Was there backtalk or attitude being copped?
Again, these are the risks one takes while doing that activity in a public space. Its just one of those understood rules kind of like you don't see signs that say "No killing zone" just because there isn't a sign that doesn't necessarily make it okay.

I skate, and im damn proud of it, but hate how its stereotyped as skating is bad,
For instants:
YouTube - go skateboarding day cop vs skaters(uncut)part 1
This video here is of a police officers arresting a kids for skateboarding down a hill, he handled this really badly, and the one point id like to bring up here is that its a form or transport, if it was a bike rider riding down the hill you wouldn't see them getting chained up

If you're on property that doesn't belong to you, then it's perfectly reasonable to get kicked out for skateboarding. Getting a ticket for it seems unfair though. Unless you damaged something while you were there, you should just be made to leave without getting in trouble.

what so a pavement on a road no where near residential areas is private property.

You were the one that said you were on someone else's property.
Plus, I don't think they employ security guards for random stretches of pavement.....

Thats stupid. Ive skated ro years and havn't got in trouble. I have a skatepark near me, but i don't even use it. I love ollieing (uhh...i dunno how to spell that..) off gutters (or curbs as some called them) and onto the road then back up. Skating is full of EPIC WIN. Sorry about your friend though Tussel. Hope he dosen't get busted again :).

I thought it had something to do with you getting hurt on their property? but now that sounds stupid to me.. I think the ticket was a little harsh and uncalled for even if there was backtalk involved. I've actually never seen a ticket issued for skating O_O

It's not real skateboarding unless you get caught, that's practically the religon.
And tbh, you've got to respect the rules brethran, people (old people generally) get scared when a group of hoodies are outside a place and trying to skate down some stairs where people could get hit.
That is why Parkour > Skateboarding.
Skateboarding damages property.
Parkour damages the body.
Ooorah.

I think this is the reason behind a lot of it. The kid might not care if he gets hurt, and neither does the city/town that owns the public property, but they sure as heck care about it when the kid's parents sue and try to collect insurance money for the kid's stupidity.
I used to skate, but quit when I grew up. I don't care who skates where, just as long as they stay out of my way and don't vandalize anything. I get annoyed with the little buggers who have no respect for people on the sidewalk ... if they bump me, they'll end up doing a faceplant.

Got that right ... Parkour doesn't need asphalt and pretty little curved ramps. In fact, the more diverse the "playground", the better!
