While being pissed off that AWP will take me like a year, i've been mulling this question over in my mind. Why is Race mode seemingly the second (or third if you count power leveling in hangman's noose) most popular gametype? Everyone complains about the map, getting hit in the first turn, etc? I mean, come on, who the hell buys GTA with the intention of online racing? There are definitely at least 5 better online racers for 360.
At least i finished Fly the Co-op and got up to Rank 5 (day 9 of playing the game). I'm considering not bothering with AWP until the lobbying system is fixed or just wait until the online community dies.
i personally hate race and have never done one...

i find that there quick and a good laugh, when theres 16 players it does get really laggy but around the 10 people mark you can have a good race, its fun and goes pretty quick, just play for the fun and dont go in trying to win because your get pissed off when you crash or get spin. just play for the fun have a laugh and you might win :P

yup, that would be why
I think it's because the racing in it is unlike any other around in the market, for exaple, I HATE forza 2... like so much, and I already get my fix for speed/crashes in Burnout Paradise on the ps3. So GTA IV for me is like the middle ground between sim and arcade-like racing.
That, and people are crazy for the AWP achiev. Dam 30 points!! I hate you so much!!

To build on your previous statement a little bit...there is a large number of gamers out there who are not only chasing achievements,...but chasing TOUGH achievements. AWP is a great example...and that achievement is the all-encompassing race achievement. If I see a gamercard with AWP having been unlocked I will automatically think:
1. This guy put some time and effort into the game
2. This guy has won A LOT
3. This guy has developed some serious skill during this time as well
The first thing that will NOT enter my mind is that he boosted for it because the online setup/lobby system in GTA 4 is not all that conducive to boosting. Personally, I pursue these types of achievements as well. I think that there is also a movement among the developers to make some tougher achievements in newer/upcoming games. For proof...check out the achievement lists for...Guitar Hero 3...Portal...Ninja Gaiden 2...Unreal Tournament 3.

I enjoy GTA Race, but normal Race is a joke half the time. Every once in a while I will find a good driver, but half the time people only bash into each other and go flying past turns. Nobody slows down to go around turns in the fastest manner, which is bad, as when I try to take a turn sharp to get past everyone, someone ends of rear ending me at full speed, using me as his means to slow down to take the turn. Don't get me wrong, it is a perfectly valid strategy to slam into somebody to slow down, as you also knock away the competition.
GTA Race on the other hand is good old fashioned fun. I really don't mind losing, as the game ends up turning into 1-4 people actually trying to finish and pass each other, while everyone else screws with those people. Grabbing a bus from the Time Square place and setting it at a choke point, usually a bridge on-ramp, is endless fun, as they are nearly impossible to get around. I spend most of my time playing NOOSE though.

I haven't gotten into GTA Race yet. Thanks for the heads up on what to expect. I agree with your thoughts on standard race though...it's awful when the player count gets above 10 or so. To address the thread though...these are actually some really fun modes...and obviously Rocksatr thought so or they wouldn't have made an achievement involving such thorough play in all race types.

I don't know about you guys, but I would have to say the majority of the assholes flock towards both Race modes. If it isn't a Supercar/Motorcycle race, I immedietly get bombarded with insults and votes to kick.
If you can get into a room with people who can drive, and aren't asses, racing is fun. Unfortunatly, that's rarely the case, and people do everything to screw everyone up, and GTA's matchmaking makes sure you keep getting matched up against them.
Don't even get me started on AWP.

O.K. weekends over now it might calm down a bit, the races are quite good if you have 4567 racers, i have won 5 races but not got Top of the midnight ach- maybe too much damage. One little shit quit just b4 i crossed the finish line after dodging him for 3 laps. But it is for fun that these lobbies are full of Halo bored sprogs.

i find it confusing as well that race modes are very popular. find it very disappointing that Coops N' Crooks didnt catch or neither Turf Wars, they were pretty fun when large amount of ppl joined in.
