I hope I don't come across as a bit of an old woman, I'm not offended by the language used in this game (god knows I've screamed worse at the TV whilst playing it!) it just seems very excessive in it's use.

Every conversation is F' this an F' that, I've played GTA 4 all the way through to completion and never even noticed it in that, I guess it comes with the territory. In Alone In The Dark though, it comes across a little forced in my opinion. Lame attempt to look "cool"?

What you guys think?

You know, I was just thinking that myself. It just doesn't seem natural when they drop the F Bomb. GTA IV does have a lot of F Bombs too but since you're playing a mobster type person it's natural and you don't notice it as much.

Yeah I noticed it as well. And like you I have little problem with swearing and for sure called the tv way nastier names while playing this game. It just feels forced and unnatural. It also degrades the story and charcter development a bit. It's kinda a shame, the overall big story I like, but the mini stories inside that are very B-movish. I guess the swearing comes from that.

The special edition I have also has a free downloadable movie or other trailer I once already saw on the web somewhere of the guy who wrote it. Apparently a writer for a few US tv cop shows and writes what looks to be thrashy novels (asuption from the movie). But he's being put forward as if they hired one of the greatest story and charcter writers of all time. Tbh if saying "fuck" the entire time makes it as he calls it a more streetwise, New York feel then he really ain't much of a writer :p Also kinda takes away from the original charcter who imho had a bit higher standing then saying fuck the entire bloody time in every bloody sentence :p

After playing Kane and lynch, I didn't notice it. In till the end of the game. Besides, if all that stuff was happening to you, you would curse too. Anyway once I did notice. I could ignore it, without it affecting the story to me much.

i think its funny. on the skip chapter screen if you read one of them it says something about anna asking him for the stone and he "Gently told her to fuck off". I find that hilarious lol.

I wouldn't mind it as much if Carnby wasn't the one throwing them out constantly. He strikes me more as the sort who should be working in a museum or something, not talking like he's a 12 year old playing on Live. I don't notice it too much though, I suppose I've become desensitized to the whole thing.

Fingers crossed I never have to find out!

WARNING POTENTIAL SPOILER BELOW! (Highlight to read)

Isn't this guy supposed to be like a hundred or something though? Did they really talk like that back then? Obviously I wasn't around back then, but my Grandad sure doesn't have the potty mouth Mr Carnaby does!

The swearing does seem forced, for the most part. They have said that they are trying to go for authentic New York dialog, but it's just not working for me.

Fuck this. Funnily I did notice about 5 mins before I read this thread. In the Ambulance... I'm a 100 years old! WHAT THE F*"$...

No need at all...

I'm sure you would be swearing if the city around you was crumbling and zombies were trying to rape you.

The excessive swearing is just the video game developers being extremely lazy and not thinking of anything clever to say. If you want clever dialogue play bad company.

your wrong there it took them 3 years to make this game i dont think they would let somthing as stupid as a couple of lines in the script bring the game down. he comes from NY and we all know the streo type for that is the sort of person that would say or do what they wont when they want so a couple of swear words are not much of a big deal besides the game is an 18 so they can do it.

Well, in my opinion, I too would swear quite a bit if that were to happen you know, cracks appearing, buildinds being ripped up, humans being turned into humanz, evil little ratz around, the area surrounding Central Park pretty much being torn up.

But yeah, that's just me.

I am only a third of the way through the game... and it doesn't seem excessive. I read this before playing, and thought it was going to be retarded but its not too bad. Maybe thats just cause I was raised in a household that said worse lol

You people who think the swearing isnt excessive should play the original two Alone In The Darks!
Edward Carnaby is from new york but no he isnt a mobster or urban vigalante, he shoudnt be cursing to this extent, in the original outing he was a gentleman who had monsters coming at him, but he beahaved as his character should, the only thing they kept of the 'real' Edward Carnaby was his name.
The swearing isnt bad but it shoudnt be there, and especially not to that extent.

Oh and for the 3 years of development that seems to be a part excuse, did you notice the game isnt just a script? They spent ages designing the interactions, inventory, map making (they scaped it from the real thing) and they're all time favourite fire. Then models, textures, meshes, etc. All this would take along time, which eats allot of those 3 years.

If you find stuff like this offensive thne first read the box. This game is rated M so it is kinda expected to have 'mild language'.:p

the first day i got this game, i was playin it with my mate craig, then he pointed out that someone swore at least once in every cutscene.

i decided to play on to porve him wrong, i was in the undergroung when i got a phone call (cant remember the guys name) and he tells you that your last name is carnby then hangs up...
the screen was fading to black.
Me: HA no one swore in that one
Carnby: FUCK

It's excessive, it just doesn't sound right. Every time I hear someone swear in the game it just feels like they could have found a better word to use there. I mean I swear frequently but not when I'm trying to have a normal conversation with someone. Even with all the madness that goes on in this game there was no need for half the swearing. Like the part where your in the Ambulance and Sarah says I'm coming with you. Carnby's reply was something like "Fuck around and I'll shoot you", sure it isn't the cliche line I was expecting but it is lazy script writing like someone said earlier. Even if it took them three years, they could have worked on a better script, while some one else was fixing all of the other problems this game has.

I only played the first two chapters and seeing what the guy had to go through I don't mind him swearing. I mean, he's seen people getting eaten by cracks, people having big cracks all over their bodies, he had to dodge exploding cars and on his drive to central park all hell broke loose.

It's just when swearing is totally out of place, like when you find your PDA and get a call from Crowley, he immediately proceeds to call him a piece of shit.

.

This is exactly why it bothered me. This simply is not the original Carnaby due to the way he was written. What I understand is that the company who developed the game is very unfamiliar with US culture and as such hired an in their eyes "established US writer". They even brag about it in the special edition's making off. Some writer who mainly seems to have written third rate cop-novels and cop-series for tv. And I don't think he knew anything about the original games. Basically he wrote a B-cop-series script and according to him in New York everybody swears, and the ineperiance of the development team took this for the truth apparently.

It still surprises me as it seems nobody was really familiar with the original games (new studio and new writer) that they did so little background checking. Nor that Atari as a publisher would have pointed this out to them. I guess they where to busy rushing and juggling a project WAY beyond their scope and way out of budget and time (simply said, they couldn't deliver). Lost to much time on the fire, which looks beyond good still, but everything else, incl. the story, it was just to much to handle with the given budget and time. As somebody who knows how such development goes, you can just reconise that they simply had problems preforming at such a high level. To small a company, to big a project.
