Something is up with your PC then, this site does not use those types of advertisements...
I suggest an adware scan, probably Spybot Search and Destroy or Ad-Aware. Both have freeware versions.
Can you be more specific on what ad it is and we'll look in to it.

Firefox + AdBlock Plus FTW! Seriously if you're not using both of these yet do it now. Ads on the web have gotten way out of hand, seeing it without all the ads is like a breath of fresh air.

All may seem well and good for you. But take away the ads on the vast majority of sites and guess what, you have no sites :p

Not for webdesigners it doesn't :/
Advertisements are a main source of income for most websites.. and I pressume from the extreme amount of traffic this site gets.. companies bid for impressions to get their advert on here rather then the normal rate making the adverts here pretty important to whoever pays the bills ^^

Just a question on the case of advertisements - does x360a get money from:
1. Just hosting the ads
2. Everytime someone clicks on an add
3. Everytime someone completes an offer/buys something
If it's number 2. I might start clicking on all of them?
Peace
The problem is nawt that cause the vast majority of the admins are in Europe, we can't see the geo-targetted US ads which is why we don't know what the problem is.
All pop-ups and extensions of ads should be user initiated, i.e. you drag your mouse over or click.
And Narco, we get money no matter what, so don't go clicking unless by mistake or are intrigued cause we can lose the support of advertisers with "click fraud" (that's a genuine term :p).

You can DL apps that makes your IP from the US, then you could see what problems the members across the pond are experiencing, if any.

It is getting a bit annoying. I had an ad pop down about half the page yesterday when I went into the forums. I think the top of the box said google ads. And just today coming into the forums an ad popped down from the banner area as I was about to click on 'quick links' and I found myself on Circuitcity's site....Arggghhh!!
I understand the purpose of the ads but some are getting quite unruly.

Ya, that's what I use too. Firefox is a really well put together browser anyway. I have only had to block that damn snake ad (actually whoever hosts it). i dont mind the ads...they go away in a few seconds and they help generate revenue for the site. i do have one issue though...i like to print out all of the guides for the MANY games that i have and the ones that i rent. i put these guides into 2 four inch binders that i keep. the issue is with the viking game on the main site. when you click guide and then try and hit the PRINTABLE VERSION text link...there is always an ad that covers up the PRINTABLE VERSION link because the guide is stretched due to images that was added. if there was a way to move a few of the images to another line thus reducing the width of the guide, it wouldnt be an issue. plus some of the test runs behind the ad because the width isnt auto adjusting.
dvdmanpa
07-16-2008, 05:32 PM
its not one specific ad...but if you go to the main page, under retail games and viking....on the top bar, click guide and then over to the right should be a text link for the PRINTABLE VERSION. that link as well as some of the text and images from the actual guide itself gets covered up by the top-most ad on the right hand column.
Can you explain to Webb what the actual ad is, as we in the UK get different ads based on region.

dvdmanpa
07-16-2008, 05:51 PM
sure...but i dont think it is as much of the ad that is causing the issue as i think it is the width of the actual guide. the ads rotate...netflix, playasia, quizrocket, unreal tournament, etc.... the ad is in its normal, correct position as is on every other guide page; however, for some reason, the guide for viking almost "stretches" behind it due to the side-by-side images for the skullbagger achieves. this causes the guide to be "wider" than they are normally...
hope this helps...
Yeah, the images should help get the problem sorted out.

The floating ads by harley davidson (peel me, #1) get dangerously close to the links I want to click, but so far I've been able to avoid them.
But this circuit city ad with the Wiimote is killing me. I'll click on a "forum" link from an achievement listing, and bam! Circuit city homepage. Turns out the rollover pops out automatically on the load event and keeps until the wiimote animation is done playing (10 seconds). The worst part being the transparency because I am lulled into smooth browsing on the site and ambushed by my third most hated consumer electronics dealer (but that's a personal issue).
Proposed solution: disable the expand and play animation event until the mouse over function is called (meaning, no expand and play on the load page event, just when the visitor's mouse rolls over the pre-defined ad space)

Lately I have had Mazda pop up (a group of stickmen walk across the screen) and a Molson Canadian Keg pops up and takes up about the direct center of the screen.
I am running Firefox and I'm living in Canada.
It's an annoyance mainly because this is my homepage and I usually check the news feeds right when I open up my browser but this comes up about halfway through reading the title of an article. Obviously it's not nearly enough to make me change my homepage.

Whoaaaaaaaa calm down there buddy. I dunno why you get so mad and filled with rage and dissapointment with the site... Ads are here to help make the site money to keep it up and running. I get the same very ad and it doesn't make me turn into the hulk every time i get it. I just close them when there done loading. It's not like they keep comming up when you close them, just maybe on the next page you load. Even so, there are many different solutions you can turn to if they bother you that much. You could listen to the many other people here that suggested Firefoxs Adblock. It really works! I promise!. But if you don't feel like doing that then I guess you really don't mind turning into the hulk every time you see a big ass beer keg pop up on your screen. Today when I logged on to the main page I had a wiimote flying all over the place and a heros ad that was covering half the text! Come on, this is way out of hand! I understand that this is an advertising revenue based site, but please put an end to these ads that block the content! It's a tune out and I end up going to other sites that have better control over their sponsors! These types of ads are revenue generators, but at what cost to traffic? In the end you would be better off limiting intrusive advertising to prevent traffic loss. Try increasing your advertising revenues through traffic count rather than obnoxious and intrusive adverts! Furthermore, tell your sponsors that these types of ads are counter productive! When the Hulk blocks my screen it makes me NOT want to buy that game!

I understand that you do not create the ads and probably don't even have an approval process if they come from a pool, but I implore you to examine this issue. As a media professional with extensive experience in tradition advertising mediums, I encourage you to use the models of tv, radio and print to improve your own. They all have an approval process and cost/benefit analysis system for both promotional and revenue generating programs. Any media outlet will bend over backwards to accommodate their clients, but there comes a point where the clients desires become egregious to the success of your medium. Because of the ease of access and distribution in your digital medium, it tends to be administrated by hobbyists and tech providers with unsophisticated business models or considerations. This is not a bad thing - certainly preferable to media run by bankers and lawyers. I am a big fan of emotional and interest driven media, but it does have its deficiencies. Advertising agencies/providers understand this and prey on your industry's youth/inexperience and lack of sophistication/organization not only charge absurdly high commission and placement rates, but also to impose unfair demands on you, the providers. Remember, that the advertiser is the client and YOU are the service. Don't get buffalod by the middle man! Their take it or leave it attitude does a disservice to both the client and the provider!

But if the adverts weren't so intrusive then the user would not need to use these tools, would they?
On another note, don't forget that the site's value lies in its users, without whom there would be no product to peddle. You should not dismiss our concerns or burden us with the responsibility of fixing the site by supplying you with screen shots! We are already doing you a favor by voicing our concerns, you can handle them as you see fit. If you want to improve your product, then you should consider that, if nothing else, the sheer number of people who are complaining about the intrusiveness of the advertising is a problem that warrants examination at the least! But it's your decision, I am only trying to be helpful, not do your job.

Thanks for the help, but saying this does this, and that does this doesn't really help. We have numerous ad servers we run through, so without a screen, it's hard to find it's source. What happens if each company was running a Circuit City ad?

I fully understand the need for ads, and it's great that you're popular enough to warrant many ads. But how do you not know exactly what is being displayed? Don't you want to have an idea of what companies put on your site before they do it? For the most part the ads are ok, but some of them are horrible. I just assumed you knew it and were alright with it.

I see your conundrum, but speaking of Circuit City, I don't understand how you could NOT be aware of that particular Circuit City advert the user above referenced. I knew EXACTLY the ad he was referring to without a screenshot! This is only one instance however, and I'm sure that there are many cases that would be difficult for you to isolate from "this does that..." so thanks for explaining. It's not that I mind doing whatever I can to help make the site better - I thought you were trying to bury us in bureaucracy.
I never claimed to have any working knowledge of internet advertising, but I do know that when a radio listener says "I hate that Mama's Pizza ad! It's so annoying I change the station every time it comes on!" three things happen: 1. Mama's Pizza is very happy cause their recall rate is through the roof! 2. The station is very unhappy because listeners are tuning out, killing their average quarter hour ratings and time spent listening, effectively compromising their rate integrity! 3. The agency placing Mama's Pizza doesn't give a damn about the radio station because Mama's Pizza is the one giving them their money!
In any event, good luck with those ad servers! I imagine when you chop off one obnoxious advertiser's head three more pop up, so keep fighting the good fight! I am glad to know that you recognize the problem and are addressing it. If you are sincerely interested in enlisting the community's help in gathering specifics, I might suggest starting a sticky thread for people to post screenshots of intrusive advertisers.
I use Adblock, but I also donate and subscribe. :)

It makes sense that Circuit City wouldn't advertise in the UK. Honestly, they are months away from bankruptcy, and these types of ostentatious gorilla advertising tactics are just symptomatic of Circuit City's arrogant and blatant disrespect to their customers that have put them in the shape they are in. THAT is horrible customer service! You guys are responsive and actively trying to improve the site in many aspects, a customer service model that serves both your customers and yourselves well. I appreciate all the official response, and it's good to see that you guys do care about this issue and are responsive to your customers. This is why you guys are the number one website of your type, and why I and so many other members are so loyal and patient when we do have issues. Thanks for a great site!

I've had some problems with the extension ads covering the checkboxes for my check lists. Sometimes they pop out and don't pop back in.

Please kill the Circuit City ads. OMG they are so annoying.
I definitely agree here.

And in real life, we'd call you a horrible customer. If you don't like it, theres plenty of other sites where you can go and talk about the 360 so jog along :)
It was bad enough that consoles had fanboys but apparently even websites do as well these days.
Horrible customer service? We offer you a service for free and we're trying to fix any problems actively and yet you call that horrible? Sorry but I just don't get that.
Telling people to stop throwing their toys and putting on a seemingly sarcastic and holier than thou attitude is what is in my opinion bad customer service. People who are already feeling frustrated will only become further filled with frustration and then people getting told to "jog along" brings up further unpleasant emotions as well.
Also how everyone seems to feel compelled to point out how "super awesome" this site is at the drop of a hat can also be counterproductive.

I agree that Webb's comment was a bit demeaning, and it did kinda rub me the wrong way as well. The fact is, however, that at least the admins on this site are responsive to the community if not always the most diplomatic ambassadors. We are all susceptible to frustration, and I would be hard pressed to find a forum with admins that don't have a similar fuck all attitude - it seems to be par for the course for some reason. Perhaps it's the nature of the beast.
As far as the comment about you being a bad customer and telling you to jog along, I thought that was completely out of line and that user was chastised pretty strongly by an administrator. It was probably a knee jerk reaction, but by no means are that particular user's disrespectful and unappreciative remarks condoned by or indicative of this site's administration or your fellow members.
You are also correct that undue praise and admiration can lead to complaisance, but I imagine that the duties of administrating a forum can be pretty thankless, and they deserve, at the very least, an occasional "attaboy" from members who do appreciate the services they provide - presumably on a volunteer basis.

Lately theres been Harley Davidson ads poping up.
I underdstand the need for advertising just frustrates people sometimes when they go wrong. The ones where they follow you up and down the page are a prime example.
Not that I would dare accuse x360a of doing that intentionally.
There to awesome for that!
I'm informed that Circuit City has been removed now. I'll look in to SafeCount next and pick the annoying ones off one by one :p
@ Zenquen, I'm just as human as you and I'm British, so sarcasm oozes out of my veins ;) The vast majority of people know I'm like that... I'm harmless really :D
@ Peace - That Heroes ad looks like a loading problem as opposed to an advert issue so will see RX about that one.

I'm tempted to say you're "super awesome," but I'm afraid that might be counterproductive... Uhoh, was that sarcasm oozing out of MY veins? But I'm not even British!!!
Oh, as far as that Safecount.net thing goes, I suspect that was piggybacking on the Circuit City ad, but I'm not sure. I only seem to notice it when the Circuit City ad is displayed, but I can't be certain...

I haven't actually had a problem with most anything you have said or done, i was more concerned simply with rampant brown nosing.
I will also say before I get beat up by random people on the internet that I like the site and whatever else im required to say to make people happy. Hooray for achievements and such.
:woop:I am adding this emoticon to show that I am genuinely trying to be nice and not as sarcastic or grumpy as my posts may make it seem after the first guy who replied to me in this topic seemed to think my head truly was going to explode with rage. :) heres another for good measure. :Bounce: this ones just kinda cool.
