My fame's at about 2 1/2 stars, but up until now I haven't been sure I've been going about things the right way. I don't often stick to other allied squads because they rarely head in the direction I need to go. If I have 2 days to take 4 bases, I can't mess around fighting random enemies in the middle of nowhere, which is what most allied officers seem to do. So I tend to rush to the target bases and try to chip away at their defences.

Also, am I right in thinking that there's no way of telling what enemy types I'm going to confront, so I might as well take control of the units that I've levelled the highest, and have the strongest special skills, rather than trying to make use of everyone? Take the long spear class - good against horses, but useless against everyone else, and since I'm not going to run into nothing but cavalry, why take command of them?

Am I missing the point at all? What are the best tactics to use, in general? Thanks. :)

I think you've got the right idea. I spent way too much time messing around with lower level units instead of getting my fame up, and I think it ended up costing me in the long run. I'd concentrate on getting your swords, spears, and bows to 70% so you can initiate the firearms quests and not worry too much about the rest of them at the beginning.

Also, make use of your recruit slots. Hire some cavalry and maybe some bowmen or a spear squad--that way you can just run across the map, call them when you get to the enemy base, and demolish whatever's there. I also think it's wise to keep one slot for a unit you're weak in but want to level up. For your example of Long Spears, you could hire a squad of pikemen and just keep them around, and then if you ran into a situation where you could use them (say, on a bridge with a bunch of cavalry units charging you), you can whip them out for some fast leveling.

Hope any of that makes sense :).

Thanks for the advice. :)

I found it daunting for the first few hours because I was unlocking so many new classes so quickly, I couldn't really concentrate on their individual skills and just ended up controlling whoever was standing around. Glad I'm not messing up the game by mostly using my preffered units.

Oh, and good idea with the pikemen. :) I'm going to keep some in reserve and call them out whenever there's too much cavalry. They seem to be really cheap to recruit, so why not.
