Ok,

I don't think that this has been suggested yet, but I use to have this on my old forum that i was on, and It saved so much time.

I now the forum is riddled with repeated threads, and the mods generally having to go into; "Use the search function next time."

Then some people will use the search function, but not come up with something that they need. So how about this;

When someone is typing in the Title of the thread, then under neath that thread title box there would be something saying like:

"Here are similar Threads..."

And the search engine would show up threads that had the same sort of question. This would save the mods a lot of time, and the poster, as the answer could already be answered in this new thread. So for example.

Say Mr. Bob wants to find out how long his xbox will take to come back from MS. Mr. Bob is new to the site, and so does not use the search function.
Mr. Bob posts his thread entitled; "How long will my xbox take to come back??", Then a box under neath the thread title tells him that their is already threads like this. Ones called: "My xbox has been sent off, how long will it take", and "Xbox has been sent away". Mr. Bob stops what he is doing, and reads both of these threads, he now has an Idea of how long they will take, and so will not have to clutter the forum with a repeated post. Mr. Bob is happy!!

I realize, I haven't explained it in its best fashion but there we go.

Here is another one.

People are sometimes asking for, "How do I get 6 points?", so why not on the Achivement area have a "Point amount search function". So for example again; Mrs.Bob wants to know how she can get 6 points, so she dosen't have a 4 at the end of her card. She goes onto the game section (Retail/Arcade), and goes into the "Point Amount Search" bar, so insted of having to go through a lot of games, or ask around the forum, she can just type in the amount (There could also be a filter?). Mrs. Bob finds that Game X has 6 points, and is a very easy one to get. Mrs. Bob is happy!!

Also one last point. How about a "Adult" Tag if things on a thread get a little...Hot?...

So there we go.

There is a thread with all the odd-valued achievements somewhere. I'd link you if my proxy server didn't suck.

pretty good idea. There's been countless times where I and others have searched for a topic and not found it because we haven't entered the exact terms of the other posts. For example - if someone typed in (not that they would) a post on 'achievement whores' and there were none with that exact title they would create a thread. But there could be other threads with the titles that a similar but not exact like 'people who love achievements' 'achievement seekers' 'gamerscore whores' etc. etc.

This might actually link them to semi-related threads

Great Idea

But there are other times when people just don't care. Have some fun right now, go into the GTA forum. Now, in the Item and Location sticky (where it is supposed to be), you will find alllllll brands of discussion on Brian Part 3. Now search for "brian part 3." There are 13 different threads that this discussion appears in.

Now not having seen Brian the third time causes you to have 99.50% completion. So people want to know what to do, but if you search for "99.50%" there is another 6 threads about people discussing it, one of which is the % completion sticky, where the discussion should be taking place.

So there is an example of 17 threads that serve no purpose (not counting the stickies where they're supposed to be), and can be found with the search function.

I don't think it's a matter of the search function not working, it's a matter of people not caring enough to use it, and thinking they're the very first person in the whole world who.... has this problem, found this item, found this movie, thinks this is funny, can't find this person/item/whatever, wants to know information about an achievement that not a single person in the entire world has, is notated in the achievement guide that we don't know, and and there are 9 other threads with that achievement name IN THE TITLE OF THEM... not counting all the posts in the achievement guide, and the achievement discussion stickies.... but are convinced that if they make a 12th thread.... well this time information will magically appear that no one ever found before, and it will be all because of them.

Ok, I'm better now, rant over with.....

The moral is, please use the stickies and the threads that have already been made. For someone who has spent the past 3 weeks living in a single forum... they drive a person insane. :(

This is a win/lose.

Win:

Takes care of all the other threads.

Lose:

Try typing in Achievement Guide into that feature...

Now this would be perfect if win you see the 'this is similar' part, the threads listed link you to the other threads. Like say:

I type in:

Help on Level 6

The thread will say 'similar'

Level 6 help
Hard level 6
Level 6 solutions
etc.

Now if I click on Level 6 help it will take me to the Level 6 help page.

That would make it perfect.

I think when you are typing it in, you could use a filter to help limit it all.
