View Full Version : "Thank You" Hack

Alright, I just had an idea how to possibly improve this site.

What I'm talking about is a "Thank You" Hack, e. g. one like this: Click (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=165673)

This basically adds a button and a box under each original post (should be possible to enable it only in certain forums) if you click on the former your forum name will be added to the latter. The purpose of this is to reduce "postcount +1" posts, and spamming.

While we surely all agree (i hope :p), spamming up to a certain point is ok and fun. But I often stumbled upon a thread (e.g. an Achievement Guide in the making, Helpful tips, Lists, you name it) where I wanted to say thanks. If I now only post a one-liner or something like that, it feels a bit like spamming (which it is).

This would be a way good/quality threads get the attention they deserve, without them becoming confusing because of posts which do not contribute to the subject.

If it would be too much work, was already discussed or if the idea is just crap, lock the thread up :p. Just wanted to share this and see what others would think about it.

You can PM someone if you want to say thanks.

These always turn into popularity contests

Well, thats the downside, yup. But it was worth a shot ^^.

Still, it could have its usefulness, but i've seen it mostly in smaller forums.

/edit

That would be a good way to take advantage of the new vistor messages on the members profile. I'm not sure how long they stay on there or if everyone can even see them (haven't tried it yet), but you see something you want to thank someone for, leave a message on their profile.

That's actually not a bad idea. Will try this out, thanks ;)

Not really. As long as it's for the thread and not individual posts it would be the thread that wins the contest not the user. Although even if it did turn into a contest what's the downside? More helpful people working hard to get thanked? A thread wouldn't receive any advantages/disadvantages from having a full/empty thankbox.

I'm like Pest. I don't want to post when all I'm adding is 'thanks' but I don't like the idea of not thanking people when they've helped me. With a system like this I can give a little nod to all the people who have been contributing without getting in the way. I get to express my gratitude, the posters get a little pat on the back for being good people, and we all walk away happier.

That's kind of how I feel. You put this in better words than I possibly could currently. So...thanks :p.

Anyways, I'd still like to see this implemented. I only made good experiences with it in the past in several other forums.

And yep, i know that what i wrote in my last post is kinda contradictory to now. I'm going to fix that right now by finally going to sleep, only 5 % left in Gta IV.
